Choosing the Perfect, Unique and Personal Baby Shower Gift ...

baby shower gifts

Baby shower gifts help prepare new parents to bring their little bundle of joy into the world. They are used throughout the phases of their child?s life, and some gifts stand the test of time, staying in the hearts and lives of families throughout their lives. When I shop for a baby shower gift, I try to find one-of-a-kind items or a gift that is personalized whenever I can. One of the hottest gift ideas for any mom who is having a daughter is a Disney couture Cinderella necklace. The mommy can enjoy wearing it for a few years and can pass it down to her daughter to wear on special occasions. Pulling the beautiful Disney couture Cinderella necklace out of your jewelry box, showing it to your toddler, and telling her that some day it will be hers is a very special way to teach your little girl about treasure and keepsake items.

I did this with my own daughter with a special Disney necklace that I received as a gift. We both enjoyed looking at the item in my jewelry box, and my Disney necklace was always the first thing that she wanted to see. I eventually let her wear it for special occasions when she was a little bit older, and I have now given it to her to keep in her own jewelry box.

Types of Jewelry that Make Great Shower Gifts

One time I was going to make a gift basket for my co-worker?s baby shower. I wanted to give her the beautiful Disney couture Cinderella necklace as a special gift, but I wanted to surprise her in a unique way. I decided to make a small basket a baby grooming basket. I filled it with baby grooming items that she would be able to use in the first few months of her baby?s life, as well as when the baby was older.

The Disney couture Cinderella necklace was a beautiful Cinderella platinum-plated pendant necklace shaped like a large key. It was embellished with rhinestones and had lots of bling! My friend could wear it for a while, and when her baby got to be a little bit older, she could pass it down to her. I also wanted a very special keepsake gift to give the baby to use now. I considered buying a pink plastic set that was very cute, and it had a little frog painted on the back that looked hand-painted. I decided to pass it up because although it was cute, a personalized set would likely become a keepsake in the future. The plastic set would likely break and be thrown out. I went online and ordered a sterling silver baby comb and brush that both had the baby?s name on them. I disguised the Disney couture Cinderella necklace and the comb and brush set by surrounding them with organic shampoo, baby wash, and baby shampoo. Then, I tucked two organic cotton bath mitts into the basket. My friend was really happy with the bath products for her baby, but when she saw the Cinderella necklace for her daughter, she was totally shocked and happy.

Choose a Gift that is Embroidered or Special in Some Way

The same goes for receiving blankets and other baby clothing that is often given for baby shower gifts. Why choose a plain receiving blanket when the mom will probably get some from the hospital, plus numerous others from friends? But this is still a great gift choice if it is unique and special. There are soft, Coyuchi organic cotton receiving blankets that have adorable embroidery on them that would make a really unique gift. These types of gifts are keepers and will probably be passed onto future generations.

I have come to the conclusion that if I am going to spend a certain amount of money on a gift, then I should spend that money wisely. Choosing something unique is worth the extra money because of its uniqueness. The mom and baby will probably use a unique gift more often, while plain and ordinary sheets, bedding, and grooming items are stuck away in a drawer or used all up and discarded. Instead of giving a plain gift, why not choose something soft, cozy, and extra special like Coyuchi organic cotton sheets for the newborn?s crib? As an added bonus, baby will not have any chemicals near their skin since organic cotton is raised without toxic chemicals.

Choose a Gift that Will Get Plenty of Use

Of course you will want to know that the gift you give to your friend for their baby shower will be used many times. To make sure of this, you can choose a practical gift for the new mom, like a video monitor system. She will surely get a lot of us out of it when she is in another in the house, and you?ll save her a lot of steps from needing to go into the nursery to check on the sleeping baby. I have always had audio monitors for my children, and these are also very good and cost much less than the video monitors. The monitors are small enough to stick in your pocket if you are carrying groceries into the house or are in the middle of an important task and you want to hear the baby if they wake up.

Another useful baby shower gift that is great for the new mom and baby is a baby sling. These are often made of organic cotton if you?re as concerned about the environment for your kids? futures as I am. Organic cotton is grown without the use of anything toxic or chemical, and they don?t have any hint of a ?chemical smell.? I was totally surprised to discover that all fabrics are coated with toxic substances to keep them crisp and looking good. This is, all fabrics except for organic cotton. Buying an organic cotton sling will really be appreciated because it will probably not be washed before use, so baby?s delicate new skin will only touch the pure softness of the fabric.

A baby bath tub filled with an organic bath sling is another great shower gift idea. If there are multiple givers of this gift, you may be able to fill it up with organic baby shampoo and baby wash, as well as an organic cotton bath towel set. Organic towels are also soft and cozy, so baby will love being cuddled in them after they get out of the water.

If you look online, you will be able to find some good buys on organic towels and baby bedding that is not only functional, but also super cute. It?s great to be able to look at websites to see what they offer while sitting in a comfortable chair at home rather than running all over town looking and price-checking. I love that I can be assured that my purchase is secure and I know that whatever I order will be at my doorstep in only a few days.

Greener Olympics Mean Cleaner Air

60-Second Earth60-Second Earth | Energy & Sustainability

A new analysis shows how the summer Olympics helped clear the air in Beijing--and combat climate change. David Biello reports

More 60-Second Earth

Bejing often suffers choking air. But there's now one more thing proven to dissipate it: an Olympics.

The 2008 summer games impelled those in charge of the Chinese capital to clear the air. Not only did they banish smog and smoke, they also inadvertently cut greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 96,000 metric tons during the games. That's according to a new analysis published in Geophysical Research Letters on July 20th. [Helen M. Worden et al., Satellite-based estimates of reduced CO and CO2 emissions due to traffic restrictions during the 2008 Beijing Olympics]

The key was banning half of all the private cars in the city from driving on any particular day during the event. The finding suggests that individual choices like whether to drive or take public transit to work have major cumulative effects.

London's so-called congestion charge for driving in town likewise cuts traffic and pollution. This year, London is bidding to have the most environmentally friendly Olympics ever.

That includes building new stadiums atop former industrial sites and urging fans to choose public transit, walking or cycling. But the British may not match the Chinese achievement, or even attempt to make the London games carbon neutral. The Olympics that finally achieves zero carbon would really merit a gold, for green.

Stone Age pushed back 20,000 years

The late Stone Age may have had an earlier start in Africa than previously thought ? by some 20,000 years.

A new analysis of artifacts from a cave in South Africa reveals that the residents were carving bone tools, using pigments, making beads and even using poison 44,000 years ago. These sorts of artifacts had previously been linked to the San culture, which was thought to have emerged around 20,000 years ago.

"Our research proves that the Later Stone Age emerged in South Africa far earlier than has been believed and occurred at about the same time as the arrival of modern humans in Europe," study researcher Paola Villa, a curator at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, said in a statement.

The Later Stone Age in Africa occurred at the same time as Europe's Upper Paleolithic Period, when modern humans moved into Europe from Africa and met the Neanderthals about 45,000 years ago.

"(T)he differences in technology and culture between the two areas are very strong, showing the people of the two regions chose very different paths to the evolution of technology and society," Villa said. [ 10 Mysteries of the First Humans ]

Hints of culture
Traces of civilization have been found going back nearly 80,000 years in Africa, but these fragments ? bone tools, carved beads ? vanish from the archaeological record by about 60,000 years ago.

In fact, almost nothing is known about what happened in Southern Africa between 40,000 and 20,000 years ago, Villa and his colleagues wrote online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This gap makes it hard to link middle-Stone Age societies to the ones that came later.

The researchers brought the latest in dating technology to bear on a site on the border of South Africa and Swaziland called Border Cave. They found that a number of the artifacts in the cave were much older than expected. [ See Amazing Cave Photos ]

Ostrich eggshell beads, sharp bone points likely used for arrowheads, and notched bones were among the fragments of life dating back thousands of years before the San were thought to have emerged. One long-bone tool is decorated with a spiral incision that was then filled with red-clay pigment. A set of warthog or pig tusks shows signs of grinding and scraping. Other bones are marked with notches, as if they were used to keep a tally of something.

The researchers also found beads, several apparently deliberately blackened by fire, one dating back more than 38,000 years. A piece of wood associated with a stone with a hole through it was dated to about 35,000 years ago. The tool appears to be an early digging stick of the sort used by the later San people to unearth roots and termite larvae.

Oldest poison
The researchers also dated a lump of beeswax mixed with toxic resin that was likely used to haft, or attach, stone points to the shafts of arrows or spears. The beeswax dates to about 35,000 years ago, making it the oldest known example of beeswax being used as a tool.

Finally, researchers dated a thin wooden stick scarred with perpendicular scratches. A chemical analysis revealed traces of ricinoleic acid, a natural poison found in castor beans. It's likely that the stick was an applicator used to put poison on an arrow or spearheads, the archaeologists reported. At about 20,000 years old, the applicator marks the first use of poison ever discovered.

"The very thin bone points from the Later Stone Age at Border Cave are good evidence for bow and arrow use," Villa said. "The work by d'Errico and colleagues (published alongside Villa's group's report in the same journal) shows that the points are very similar in width and thickness to the bone points produced by San culture that occupied the region in prehistoric times, whose people were known to use bows and arrows with poison-tipped bone points as a way to bring down medium and large-sized herbivores."

The ancient dates help fill in a continuity gap of human civilization, said study researcher Lucinda Backwell, a researcher in palaeoanthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

"The dating and analysis of archaeological material discovered at Border Cave in South Africa has allowed us to demonstrate that many elements of material culture that characterize the lifestyle of San hunter-gatherers in southern Africa were part of the culture and technology of the inhabitants of this site 44,000 years ago," Backwell said.

It seems plausible that these technologies arose 50,000 to 60,000 years ago in Africa and later spread to Europe, Villa said.

Young cancer patient battling tumor's return

For the last year, we've been following the story of a little boy named Cash Hyde from Missoula. The world has been following, too. Cashy is believed to be the youngest cancer patient in the country whose treatment was being supplemented by cannabis oil. That fact has made his story travel around the world. But, it's Cashy's smile that stays with me. That's why it's heartbreaking to share the news that Cashy's brain tumor has returned.

"Everyone hold your babies close tonight," Cashy's mom Kalli posted on Facebook Friday. "We found out a hour ago that our baby boy cashy is now battling brain cancer again for the third time. Life is so unfair. I'm mad, sad, angry, confused, enraged, and scared to death. Keep him in your prayers please."

Cashy's family has been very forthcoming about his battle. They've risked judgement and even legal prosecution for sharing what they've done for their son. As they told kxly in a special report last year, they made the decision to give Cashy cannabis oil because the cancer drugs were wreaking havoc on his little body. He hadn't eaten in weeks. They gave Cashy the oil without his doctors' knowledge - and, almost immediately, he started to eat and feel better. They believe the oil saved his life and brought back their little boy. They wanted the world to know - and, wanted other patients to have access to cannabis oil. They've taken their message to national media and have received their share of criticism. But, they've always been clear about one thing: they'll do anything to save their little boy's life. Now, sadly, they're facing that battle again.

Cashy's dad Mike posted this on Facebook Sunday night:

Relapsed PNET is almost always fatal and there are no good chemotherapy or other curative therapies available. There are trials looking at bone marrow transplantation with aggressive chemotherapy and use of novel biologic agents, but most of these are currently experimental. This is why we must demand for safe access to cannabis, it may be Cashy's only hope!!

I don't know what's next for Cashy. I just know no 4-year old child should have to face this. No parent should have to put on a brave face while their little boy faces needles and treatment and months-long hospital stay. No big brother should have to cry himself to sleep because he's worried about his little buddy. And, no little sister should have to grow up without knowing the big brother that came before her.

I'll do my best to keep you updated about Cashy's condition. In the meantime, there are a couple of ways you can help. You can visit the Cash Hyde Foundation and see what Cashy's family has done for other children facing this horrible monster. And, you can pray for and think of this brave little boy. That's what I'll be doing for this little boy whose smile I'll never forget.

Bryant McKinnie?s back in Baltimore, with an apparently bad back.

McKinnie told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times he?s been missing from Ravens camp because he slipped and fell outside his South Florida home and twisted his lower back.

?I had an accident. I?m over it. I?m here to play football,? McKinnie said.

McKinnie?s been MIA since camp opened and was placed on the reserve/did not report list, incurring fines of $30,000 per day.

?Of course, I?m glad to be back,? McKinnie said. ?I?m kind of disappointed, though. ?I?ve been training hard, I?ve been boxing and doing all this stuff. To have a setback like this is disappointing.

?Why isn?t anybody saying I got hurt? I don?t know what people thought was going on. How I got hurt is running out of the house. It was slippery and I fell and hurt my lower back. You can?t be playing football when your back is hurting. When I fell, I said, ?I know I ain?t going out like this.??

McKinnie?s bewilderment at anyone wondering where he was ignores one significant point: With him, it?s always something.

The Vikings ran him off for being overweight, and he?s worked to get that under control with the Ravens. But they?ve moved Michael Oher to left tackle for the moment, and may be inclined to leave him there, if McKinnie can?t get on the field and do something.

Syrian rebels survive regime onslaught in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

Kofi Annan, who brokered the agreement, expressed concern Saturday about the weapons buildup in Aleppo. "I remind the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, and urge them to exercise restraint and avoid any further bloodshed."

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said their thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

These Tips Will Help You Stay On Top Of Your Personal Finances

The last thing you want to do is waste money and undermine your own hard work. You also are not sure what the best way to save your money is. You may void asking people you know, worrying that they will think badly of you. This article is the place to turn. Here you will find solid and proven financial advice to help you get back on track.

Look for creative ways to decrease your expenses, such as learning to give do-it-yourself haircuts. Even though a hair stylist may do a great job, you will spend more money. It doesn?t cost anything to give yourself or your family a haircut.

Do not request numerous lines of credit. If you?re getting more credit given to you than what you need you?re going to see this reflected in your credit history. This will make interest rates in the future go up.

Buying a vehicle is a huge expense. The smartest thing to do is to look around for the best deal. You can sometimes find great deals on dealership websites.

A high credit score is want you want. If you want to have low interest on a loan or credit card, you will need to have a good credit score. Bad credit will have a negative impact on your chances for renting property and getting utility services. With an intelligent approach, your credit score will maintain high levels.

Avoiding debt as much as possible is one of the fundamentals of keeping a tight grip on your personal finances. A home loan or car is fine because those are important things you need. However, individuals should not put themselves in positions where they must depend upon credit to pay for daily expenses.

Managing your finances is essential to your success. Protect your profits and invest your capital. If you are able to properly manage your profits, you will see a return from your investment. Set a rule for what profits you keep and what profits go into capital.

Evaluate insurance policies so you can reduce your payments. Try researching options like dropping excess coverage or bundling your policies. These relatively simple steps can net you significant savings over the long term.

Check your credit report regularly. You can do this once year for free, more often if problems are found. You should do this every six months to check your report for unauthorized changes or evidence of identity theft.

If married, make sure the partner with the better credit applies for loans. If your credit is poor, rebuilt it slowly by using a credit card cautiously and repaying the balance religiously. Once you both have a good credit score, you can both apply for loans and share your debt more evenly.

Avoid investing in poorly performing stocks out of a sense of loyalty. If the company that you?ve put money into isn?t doing that great after a while, you should take the money and put it towards something that?s doing better.

When you are at a point where you are ahead financially, take the time to start setting money aside, rather than spending it. Keep to your budget instead and invest that extra money in a future free of financial worries.

Buying items on sale can add up to big budget savings. This is not the time for brand loyalty. Buy items for which you have coupons. As an example, while you may have always purchased brand X detergent, if you have a coupon that will give you $2 off brand Y, then buy it and save money.

Using small steps can help to rebuild your personal finances. Instead of buying coffee every morning, make your own. Brewing your own coffee can save you about $25 a week. You can save money by taking the bus to work instead of driving. It could save you a few hundred dollars per month. Dollars saved through small sacrifices can beef up your savings and retirement accounts over time. In the long run, that will be worth a lot more than your morning cup of coffee.

After you have read this article you will have a better idea on what you need and you may be surprised at the ease of taking care of personal finances. Do some more research about the tips you are planning on using to be sure you understand them fully.

As economy falters, Washington fails to act

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

The economy's growth slowed in the second quarter, government data showed, as consumers, worried about jobs and wages, held back.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

The economy is stumbling and there is little evidence that leaders in Washington are willing to act to get it moving smoothly again.

Fresh data confirmed Friday that the growth of gross domestic product slowed sharply in the past nine months.?The Commerce Department?s initial estimate pegged second-quarter growth?at a 1.5 percent annual rate, the weakest showing since the third quarter of last year.

The slowdown was brought into sharper relief following the government's?revision Friday to estimates for prior quarters. First-quarter growth was bumped up by a tenth percentage point to 2.0 percent and output for the fourth quarter was raised to a 4.1 percent rate from 3.0 percent.

The report prompted the White House to cut its growth forecast for 2012 and 2013. In its semi-annual budget review, the White House said it now expects gross domestic product to rise 2.3 percent this year and 2.7 percent again next year ? down from the 2.7 percent and 3.0 percent growth projections it made in February.

In June, the Federal Reserve lowered its prediction for growth in 2012 to 2.4 percent, a half percentage point weaker than its previous forecast in April.

The latest data show the biggest drag on growth is coming from consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity. After a spending perked up last year , driven by sales of cars and other long-lasting goods, spending grew by just ?1.5 percent rate, down from the 2.4 percent pace in the last quarter of 2011. That was the weakest showing in a year.?

A separate report Friday showed consumer sentiment tanked in July, falling to its lowest level of the year so far.

Consumers have reason to hunker down, following years of stagnant wages. Now, with the jobless rate stuck at painfully high levels, there is little news from Washington to boost confidence. As the economy continues to sputter, the Federal Reserve remains on the sidelines and Congress and the White House are stubbornly deadlocked over proposals to boost growth.

Hanging over all of this is the election in November. The economy's poor showing throws?a hurdle in front of President Barack Obama's campaign to keep his job. His Republican rival Mitt Romney, a former businessman turned politician, has made his financial acumen a central theme of his campaign.

The poor showing in the second quarter has raised hopes that the Fed will step in with another round of asset purchases known as quantitative easing. But most economists feel if the Fed acts at all, it won't be at its regularly scheduled meeting next week.

"This (economic data) is the sign that policymakers must act to provide more support to the economy if they want it to grow fast enough to start putting sustained downward pressure on today's still too-high unemployment rate," said Josh Bivens, research and policy director at the Economic Policy Institute.

That action doesn?t appear likely in the near term, especially on the fiscal front.

In the latest act in the ongoing congressional dog and pony show on the budget,?House Republicans agreed to a vote next week on a Senate-approved measure that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000.

"If our Democrat colleagues want to offer the president's plan or the Senate Democrats' plan, we're more than happy to give them a vote," House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday.

But the Democratic bill almost certainly?will?fail in the Republican-controlled House, serving only to confirm that both sides are deeply deadlocked over the looming year-end tax increases and spending cuts put in place when Congress deadlocked a year ago over raising the government's legal borrowing limit.

Just as that standoff lasted until the nation was on the verge of a debt default, both sides are apparently committed to driving the government to the edge of a ruinous ?fiscal cliff? before acting. In the closing days of its current session, Congress will have to resolve the issue of expiring tax cuts and ?automatic? spending cuts that most economists believe would throw the U.S. economy into recession in a matter of months.

Spending cuts alone would result ?in an estimated 2 million lost jobs?next year?even as?the pace of hiring is already too slow to keep up with population growth.

With Congress and the White House deadlocked in partisan paralysis, the Fed is the economy?s last, best hope. With growth falling, speculation is rising over whether --?and when --?the central bank will begin pumping more cash into the financial system to spur more borrowing and spending by businesses and consumers.

'The Fed's concern and mandate is employment,? said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at Worldwide Markets. ?Annualized GDP growth at 1.5 percent cannot begin to mend the unemployment picture. Mr. Bernanke and company have all the rationale they need to open the liquidity spigot.?

But Fed watchers say it?s unlikely that policy makers will announce any new moves to prod growth at next week?s regularly scheduled, two-day meeting. One reason is that?the latest data seem to bolster hopes that the economy may still dodge an outright recession. Friday?s GDP revisions, which included growth rates all the way back to 2009, tend to bolster that view.

The new figures show that the 2007 recession was not was deep as originally reported and that the recovery was not as strong. ??

Based on a review of additional data, including IRS tax returns, the government now believes gross domestic product grew by just 2.5 percent in the 12 months after the recession ended in June 2009, not the 3.3 percent rebound previously reported.

That means that since the recession ended, the economy has been growing at an average pace of 2.2 percent. In that light, the latest reading of 1.5 percent growth represents a somewhat milder slowdown from the longer-term trend. ?

Still, any reading of less than a 3 percent growth rate will be painful, because?anything less is too slow to bring down the unemployment rate. The economy needs to grow at a 2.0 to 2.5 percent pace just to keep the?unemployment rate stable.??Most Fed watchers believe that if sluggish growth persists, or worsens, the central bank likely will fire up its money pumps by the end of the year.

It remains to be seen, though, whether those moves will have much impact.

?Today?s (GDP) report may be enough to tip the balance of probability towards further monetary accommodation before the end of the year,? said Chris Jones, and economist at TD Economics. ?But will it give the real economy the boost it needs?? Probably not.?

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke recently conceded that the Fed's powers to revive growth are limited without help from Congress and the White House, which seems unlikely in an election year.

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the latest economic data on the nation's gross domestic product, with Joel Naroff, Naroff Economic Advisors president.

College 'shopping sheet' designed to help students compare ...

The guide, called a "Shopping Sheet," is a one-page form created by the Department of Education and the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that will detail the estimated price of attending a university (tuition, housing, books, etc.), the grants and scholarships that reduce the expenditure, and the resulting net cost, or what students will actually be responsible for. The guide will show students some options for how they might be able to pay for college, including work study, loans and expected family contribution.

The form also, and perhaps most importantly, features a section on the school's graduation rate, loan default rate and the median amount students typically borrow in federal loans at the school in question, as well as the standard monthly federal loan payment for students who borrow that amount and repay it over a 10-year period. It's all written in plain English: for example, "Students at [university name] typically borrow $XX,XXX in Federal loans over X years. The Federal loan payment over 10 years for this amount is approximately $X,XXX per month."

The form is designed to reduce the confusion that can come when financial aid letters arrive in the mail. Currently, there is no uniformity--financial aid letters vary from university to university (and remember, there are some 7,000 colleges and universities nationwide) and often feature confusing, and in some cases misleading, jargon that makes it difficult for families to figure out how one college stacks up against another in terms of cost.

"Countless students I meet across the country feel like the first time they really understood how much student loan debt they were in was when the first bill arrived," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. "We must unravel the mystery of higher education pricing by giving students and families the information they need to make smart educational choices."

The guide is the latest in the Obama Administration's plan to make college more affordable, which the president rolled out in a speech at the University of Michigan in January. The idea behind the "Shopping Sheet" is that if students and families can more easily make apples-to-apples comparisons between colleges in terms of cost, they might choose the more affordable option and avoid a hefty debt load down the road. This is especially key as the average cost of attending a four-year public university increased 15% between 2008 and 2010, and as a result, students now graduate $25,000, on average, in debt. Outstanding student loan debt surpassed the $1 trillion mark in 2011.

Ideally, the guide will reduce the number of debt-stricken college graduates who say they had no idea what they were getting themselves into when taking out loans. But it will work only if the administration can get universities to use the guide. Participation is voluntary and there are no built-in incentives or sanctions to encourage colleges to comply. Secretary Duncan released an open letter encouraging universities to adopt the guide and has said he expects the majority of universities will "do the right thing." But colleges, particularly those with the highest costs, may have little motivation to sign-on. According to Reuters, as of Monday just 10 universities had said they support the idea behind the guide.

A Substance Abuse Therapist Can Provide an Objective View ...

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Anders Abadie | Thursday, 26 July 2012 09:12 | Word Count: 473

Sometimes, when a person is dealing with drug addiction, they feel as if they have nowhere to go for help. So, they just continue going down a dark path. There are also those who actually seek help, but they look to the wrong people for assistance, which could also cause more harm than good. For example, they may turn to family members and friends. This is not a bad idea in and of itself, since the support of loved ones is very important in recovery. However, when it comes to trying to dig beneath the surface of the issue, it may be better to seek the help of a substance abuse therapist. They are specifically trained in this area and can offer a perspective that family and friends cannot.

Sometimes, loved ones can be so emotionally attached that they are unable to actually tell the truth to one another. Instead, they tell the person what they want to hear or what will spare their feelings. Sadly, in their effort to protect feelings, they may end up hurting the person's growth and progress. A substance abuse therapist, on the other hand, isn't as emotionally invested, and is therefore able to ask the difficult questions that may be necessary to move forward.

The objective view that these professionals provide also helps them to have a more nonjudgmental attitude. Along with family members who want to protect feelings, there are also those who may have formed bad opinions of the patient. This causes them to see everything about them in a negative light. So, it would be difficult for that particular family member to look past the person's drug addiction and see their pain, like a specialist can. Professionals can also help the person locate what may have triggered their drug issue, which can be extremely effective.

Another reason that a substance abuse therapist is so essential is that they allow people to feel comfortable while talking to them. Drug addiction issues can be a touchy subject for some people, particularly for the friends and family of the person affected. This issue is magnified when the person actually begins discussing what triggered their habit. For instance, it could have stemmed from abuse by a family member. Saying this to another loved one could cause them to become offended and hurt, which could cause even more issues for the person and the family.

A substance abuse therapist has the ability to treat people while being as nonjudgmental, empathetic, and objective as they possibly can. This is one reason why they may produce better results than a group of loved ones trying to help solve the issue.

If you think you or a loved one may need the help of a Keller TX substance abuse therapist, consider contacting the caring professionals at http://www.elliottconnie.com to learn more about the process.

Acer Aspire S5-391-9880

The Acer Aspire S5-391-9880 is aptly named. It aspires to be something special, to combine beautiful design with uncompromising performance, to be a premium ultrabook worth every penny of its $1,399.99 (direct) price. It achieves most of its goals, just not quite enough of them. The Aspire S5 offers strong performance and is equipped with a Thunderbolt port?a lightning-fast 10Gbps port previously seen only on Apple laptops?but it falls short of delivering the sort of user experience we expect from a machine in this price range. The end result is an ultrabook that is perfectly adequate, if slightly dissatisfying.

Design
The Acer Aspire S5 has a unique design, anchored with Acer's MagicFlip I/O Panel, a powered hatch on the back of the system. With the press of a button, this concealed panel opens up, revealing the laptop's ports. This motorized panel is a neat idea, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Port covers of plastic or rubber are already needless and irritating, but when pressing the button to open the hatch?which you'll need to do anytime you want to plug in anything other than headphones?it opens slowly with an electronic grinding sound. It's not a sound that inspires confidence, and I came away from testing worried that, with long-term use, the hatch might not always open and I'd thus have no access to even basic ports. Even if nothing ever goes wrong with the panel, it's still an inconvenience that introduces another potential point of failure into the design but adds nothing to the user experience.

While we're picking on the design flaws, let's talk about a couple more. The chiclet-style keyboard is adequate, but on a laptop at this price it should be backlit. And last but not least, though the clickpad is large and responsive, it doesn't have any marks or textures to distinguish the right and left buttons from the touch surface. Because the entire surface is clickable, users may find themselves frequently right-clicking unintentionally.

The display is a little underwhelming, with the same 1,366-by-768 resolution seen on much cheaper systems instead of something to match the 1,920-by-1,080 display found on the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 ($1,299 list, 4 stars), or even the 1,600-by-900 screen of the Dell XPS 14 (Summer 2012) ($1,499 direct, 3.5 stars). The Aspire S5's built-in speakers are similarly average; they're adequate for understanding video dialogue, but audiophiles won't be satisfied by their puny bass and overall flat quality.

These little issues are easy to pick out because the rest of the design is so good. The keyboard is slightly recessed, not with a cookie-cutter inset, but with a subtle curved deck. Burnished black aluminum covers the lid and palm rest, and a magnesium-alloy frame keeps things durable and light, though the screen bezel and underside of the laptop are black plastic. It's a look very similar to that of the HP Envy 4-1043cl ($1,034.99 direct, 4 stars). The laptop is also very thin, measuring 0.59 by 12.6 by 8.9 inches (HWD), but it's worth mentioning that the Aspire S5 measures less than 0.6 inch thick when closed. Open the MagicFlip panel and the Aspire S5 fattens up to nearly a full inch. It's also light, weighing a scant 2.58 pounds, lighter than the 2.85-pound class-defining Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) ($1,199 direct, 4 stars).

Features
Although the wisdom of the MagicFlip I/O panel design may be questionable, the ports that are on it offer some of the best options found on an ultrabook. Two USB 3.0 ports offer speedy connectivity for peripherals and drives, while a full-size HDMI output lets you connect to an HDTV without an adapter. But the real treat is the inclusion of Intel's Thunderbolt technology, which has thus far been somewhat exclusive to Apple products. The Thunderbolt port physically resembles a Mini DisplayPort jack?actually, it is one?and can be used to hook up an external display?but it also offers unparalleled speed. Thunderbolt-equipped peripherals are still rare, and mostly appeal to niche groups like video professionals, but as the technology goes mainstream other uses are sure to arise.

A 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) in the Acer Aspire S5 offers twice the storage capacity of the 128GB options found in the Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13112FXS) ($799.99 direct, 4 stars) and Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012), but can't match the capacity of traditional hard drives like the 500GB drive found in the HP Envy 4-1043cl or the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 ($799.99 direct, 4 stars). What the SSD does offer, however, is speedy performance, fast boot times, and near-instant waking from sleep. You'll also find plenty of software already on the drive when you first power it up. The desktop is cluttered with links to popular Web services like Netflix, Skype, and eBay, along with icons for Acer's own utilities like Clear.fi, a proprietary media-sharing solution that uses your home network, and Acer Cloud, which bolsters the 256GB drive with cloud storage. Acer covers the Aspire S5 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire S5-391-9880 The Acer Aspire S5 is equipped with a third-generation Intel Core i7-3517U low-voltage processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. With the additional help of that speedy SSD, the powerful dual-core processor helped the Aspire S5 to score 5,053 in Futuremark PCMark 7, easily besting other top performers like the Core i5?equipped HP Envy 4-1043cl (3,962), and doubling the score of the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD, which scored 2,523 due to its slower spinning hard drive. In CineBench R11.5, however, the results were slightly different. The Aspire S5's score of 2.77 still beat Core i5?equipped systems like the Sony VAIO T13 (2.32 points) or the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 (2.39), but the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD's faster processor help it earn a class-leading score of 3.58.

Acer Aspire S5-391-9880

In multimedia tests, the Acer Aspire offered decent performance and speed, cranking through Photoshop and Handbrake in decent times, but trailing behind the Asus Zenbook Prime, which added a discrete Nvidia graphics processor to the mix. Although the Aspire S5 makes the most of its integrated graphics processing (Intel HD Graphics 4000), it was unable to produce playable scores in either of our gaming tests.

The Acer Aspire seals its 34Wh battery out of owners' reach, but in MobileMark 2007 it lasted 6 hours 33 minutes. By comparison, competitors lasted longer, like the HP Envy 4-1043cl (7:45) and the Sony VAIO T13 (7:18). The Aspire did, however, outlast the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD (5:26).

The Acer Aspire S5 certainly offers strong performance and a beautiful design, but it's a mixed bag with strange design quirks and several features that fall flat. Frankly, the biggest issue with the Acer Aspire S5 isn't the MagicFlip panel, or any of its other design flaws?it's the price. At $1,400, this is one of the more expensive ultrabooks on the market, but aside from a marginally thinner profile and a Thunderbolt port it fails to deliver the features or experience you expect in that price range. Compared with the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, which offers better performance thanks in part to a discrete GPU, it's hard to give the Acer Aspire S5 anything more than a lukewarm recommendation.

Survey: German consumer confidence stable

BERLIN (AP) ? Consumer confidence in Germany remains stable despite increasing worries that Europe's biggest economy will be dragged deeper into the region's debt crisis, a survey showed Thursday.

The GfK research institute said its forward-looking consumer confidence indicator for August stands at 5.9 points ? up slightly from 5.8 in July.

Germany's economy has seen two years of solid growth and many workers have enjoyed solid pay increases this year, while unemployment is low ? a contrast with the situation in many other parts of the 17-nation eurozone.

Consumers' economic expectations dropped significantly for a second straight month, GfK said. But their income expectations remained high ? though modestly below last month's level ? while their willingness to buy increased, helped in part by the financial crisis itself.

"The lack of trust in financial markets and historically low interest rates mean that saving money does not appeal," the group said in a statement. "Consequently consumers are more likely to make high-value purchases, such as real estate and also furniture."

Domestic demand has become an increasingly important pillar of Germany's economic strength as debt troubles and austerity programs elsewhere in Europe combine with global economic troubles to cast clouds over prospects for exports, the country's traditional strength.

The German economy grew by 0.5 percent in the first quarter compared with the previous three-month period. But its second-quarter performance is believed to have been weaker, with industrial production and business confidence slipping.

Germany's DIW think-tank estimated second-quarter growth at 0.2 percent and predicted a slight improvement to 0.3 percent in the current quarter.

"Germany cannot uncouple itself from the weak development of the eurozone," DIW economist Ferdinand Fichtner said. But he said better growth in the world economy and above all improving domestic demand should support growth in Germany.

BlackLight is designed with both novice and advanced users in mind, and features a clean interface, easy navigation, and powerful advanced options. The BlackLight graphical user interface (GUI) was specifically designed to provide forensic examiners with robust capabilities and an intuitive and elegant user experience throughout all phases of a digital forensic investigation.
