Top 10 Items for New Kitten Owners
Bringing home a new kitten is always a joy. They are cute, entertaining, and completely loveable. Sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge to think of everything you?ll need to make the newcomer welcome and healthy, so here is a check-list of the top 10 things you need to consider for your new kitten.
1. Litter Box
A rule of thumb is that you need one litter box per cat, plus one. The boxes should be in different areas if you have multiple cats, especially with kittens that are getting used to where to find the bathroom. Studies have shown that most cats prefer a finely grained, unscented litter.
2. High Quality Food
Not all foods are created equal, and some foods are more hype and marketing than quality. Talk to your vet about what kinds of foods he or she recommends. Kitten food should be used for the first 12 months of life.
3. Carrier
Going to a vet, grooming facility or kennel is much easier if your kitten is in a?carrier. Even a well-behaved cat can jump at a sudden dog bark, running away or clawing you. Keep the carrier out in the house and put the food bowl in it so they get used to it as just another piece of furniture.
4. Scratching Posts
Cats have a natural instinct to scratch in order to keep their nails sharp and mark their scent. By providing appropriate outlets for this behavior you can help protect your furniture.
5. Brush/Comb
When trained from a young age, most cats enjoy being brushed. Doing so helps keep the coat in good condition and gets loose hairs in the brush rather than around the house. Regular brushing is especially important with long-haired cats.
6. Toys
Young cats are playful and inquisitive. They will enjoy a variety of interactive toys.
7. Collars
Be sure to use only breakaway collars designed for cats. Since cats like to go into narrow spaces, they need a collar that can pop off with steady or sudden pressure to lower the risk of choking if the collar gets snagged.
8. Dental Care
Start your kitten on regular?tooth brushing?from a young age, getting them used to having this done at least 3-5 times per week. Also use appropriate dental treats designed for cats.
9. Heartworm Prevention
Cats can get?heartworm disease, even if they are mostly or completely indoors. Talk to your vet about the prevention methods available.
10. Vaccines
Kittens need to have?vaccines?starting around 6-8 weeks of age. Even if they are going to stay indoors, it?s important to cover certain respiratory diseases as well as the legally-required rabies vaccine.
A good relationship with a veterinarian is important for your kitten?s health. Your vet can answer questions about your cat?s health and perform an exam to make sure there are no problems that would need treatment. If you haven?t already, call your vet for an appointment today!
