U.S. Stock Futures Rise on China, Earnings

U.S. stock futures rose on Tuesday, helped by better-than-expected blue chip earnings and China?s efforts to avoid a hard landing for its slowing economy.

About 30 minutes before the opening bell the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 0.25% to 15,529 and those for the Standard &Poor?s 500 index climbed 0.13% to 1,692.5. Nasdaq futures rose 0.12% to 3,051.

On Monday, the S&P 500 index closed at yet another all-time high and the Dow closed within three points of its record high, despite disappointing results from Dow component McDonald?s (MCD)

The S&P 500 is up 15% so far this year.

Asian markets rose, led by a 2% jump in China?s Shanghai Composite Index after the state-run Beijing News reported that Premier Li Keqiang said China?s economic growth can?t be allowed to slip below 7%. China will stick to itsmonetary policy, but will take decisive measures to support reasonable infrastructure and social welfare investment and develop the export sector, service industry and small firms, Li was quoted on Monday as saying.

Japan?s Nikkei Stock Average gained 0.8% after the Japanese government hiked its economic outlook.

European shares climbed Tuesday, hitting seven-week highs amid?deal activity sparking a sharp rally in telecoms stocks.

In the U.S, the Federal Housing Finance Agency is on tap to release its May home-price index. Figures are expected to show a rise of 0.8% on the month. Recent housing-market reports have been disappointing with?housing starts and existing-home sales dropping?unexpectedly in June.

A reading on manufacturing activity in the Richmond region is due out at 10 a.m.

August gold futures pulled back 0.4% to $1,330 an ounce. On Monday, futures climbed 3.3% to settle at a one-month high. September crude oil futures fell 0.8% to $106.11 a barrel. The dollar edged higher against the euro and the yen.

But undoubtedly, the spotlight today is on corporate earnings, with major technology companies like Apple (AAPL) due to report after the bell. Apple shares were up 0.3% t at $427.51 in premarket trade.

U.S. insurer Travelers (TRV) posted an 85% rise in quarterly profit, helped by lower disaster losses. The stock jumped 1.4% to $86.65 in premarket trade.

Netflix (NFLX) shares fell 4% to $251.44 in premarket trade. On Monday afternoon, the online-entertainment firm reported disappointing subscriber growth.

United Parcel Service (UPS) posted a smaller quarterly profit as customers chose slower, cheaper shipping services. The company lowered earnings expectations earlier this month.

DuPont (DD) shares climbed 4% in early trading after the chemical producer reported a drop in second quarter earnings and said it was considering a spinoff or potential sale of its performance-chemical business.

United Technologies (UTX) reported quarterly earnings above Wall Street estimates, and Lockheed Martin (LMT) gained 2.9% after an earnings beat.

Posted by Joseph Lee?on 07.22.2013

He cried when he got it...

Dave Bautista is on the cover of today's USA Today for his role as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Mick Foley congratulated him. He wrote on Twitter: "Very happy to see @DaveBautista on the cover of @USAToday. I admire people, who - sink or swim - take the plunge into new waters."

Bautista was part of this year's San Diego Comic-Con with the rest of the cast of the film in a surprise panel. During the panel, he said: "I'm still to the point where I go to set every day and I can't believe I got this job."

He also said he fought hard for the role and broke down crying when he got it. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said Bautista will "freak people out" when they see him in the movie.

Meanwhile, IGN.com has released a video of Bautista and Michael Rooker talking about the film.

U.S.-led trade talks gain heft, complexity as Japan joins

By Stuart Grudgings

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Japan joined U.S.-led trade talks on Tuesday, adding its weight to a pact that covers two-fifths of the world economy but raising further doubt over whether negotiators can prise open sensitive sectors such as farm goods and state-linked firms.

Tokyo's entry, which takes to 12 the number of countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), is a key plank of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plans to shake up Japan's economy and return it to growth after years of stagnation.

His "Abenomics" agenda won a further mandate on Sunday when his coalition won a strong majority in a parliamentary election.

A major goal of U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, the TPP aims to tear down barriers in areas such as government procurement and set standards for workers' rights, environmental protection and intellectual property rights.

But it faces tough resistance in several countries, including communist Vietnam and Malaysia, where state-linked enterprises and selective handouts of government contracts are entrenched and politically sensitive.

Japan's entry adds another layer of complexity.

"They'll come up with some agreement, but whether it will be as deep as they want it to be is another question," said Jayant Menon, a senior economist at the Asian Development Bank.

"Malaysia and Vietnam will never agree to the rules they want on state-owned enterprises."

Japan, which joins the talks in Kota Kinabalu city ahead of Abe's visit this week to Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, is putting its heavily protected agriculture sector up for negotiations.

Joining the TPP would account for about two-thirds of the potential gross domestic product increase brought about by "Abenomics", according to J.P. Morgan.

But even after Abe's resounding election victory he will remain under pressure from his conservative, ruling Liberal Democratic Party to resist U.S. calls for Japan to slash high tariffs. U.S. lawmakers stressed last week they want a deal that opens Japan to U.S. autos, farm products and insurance firms.

TOUGH RESISTANCE

Japanese sources close to the talks said the government had yet to see the TPP texts and would only use the Malaysia round to assess the direction of talks on areas such as farm tariffs.

"There is no doubt Japan will have to lower the tariffs at least," said one source, adding that it could also agree to phase out tariffs over a long period and seek exemptions.

"Of course, the government will consider some kind of measures to support the agriculture industry."

Hopes of finalizing the deal by October, when Obama attends the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Indonesia, have faded. Government sources say the end of this year or some time in 2014 is now more realistic.

The pact is part of a U.S. strategic shift under Obama to focus more economic and military resources on Asia and balance China's rise. Beijing has said it is studying joining the TPP, which currently includes Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, Chile, Peru, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Brunei.

Some of the TPP's goals have met opposition, with critics calling the pact secretive and warning it could restrict freedoms in order to fight digital piracy and reduce access to crucial medicines by extending drug patent protections.

In the run-up to the current round, Malaysia's influential former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad railed against the TPP, saying it would be a surrender to big U.S. corporations.

"This is another attempt by America to let their huge corporations penetrate the markets of the small countries, in particular, government procurements," he wrote this month.

Trade-dependent Malaysia has said the TPP is crucial for expanding its export markets, predicting an extra 10 percent of its trade would have preferential treatment under the deal.

Malaysia has already won protection in some crucial sectors, including government procurement and defense, according to a source with knowledge of the talks. But there has been limited progress in other sensitive areas, including state-owned firms.

"That's an area where there is currently very little movement," said the source. (Additional reporting by Kaori Kaneko in Tokyo and Doug Palmer in Washington; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Community rallies around Burford hall project

BURFORD - Plans to construct a new community hall at the Burford fairgrounds are bringing together residents.

"The community has really rallied behind this," Teresa Jones, a director of the Burford Agricultural Society and Fairgrounds, said Sunday at a free family fun day event.

"All week, people have been coming by the fairgrounds to see what's happening and they've all been very supportive

"This is something the community needs and wants. And, for those of us on the board of directors, the support is important because it validates what we've been doing."

She made the comments as about 3,000 people - mostly families - wandered about the fairgrounds taking in the sights and sounds on Sunday. Although the event was free, people could donate to the hall project. About $12,000 was raised, said Jones, noting that more donations were promised.

Sponsored by Cathcart Auto Parts, the event included monster trucks and trick riders, as well as displays featuring the Burford Tractor Club and Ohsweken Speedway.

"The people from Cathcart Auto have been terrific," Jones said. "This is something they wanted to do and we've received a lot of support from a lot of other people and organizations as well.

"Everyone seems to realize the importance of a new hall to the community and everyone wants to be a part of it."

The agricultural society has been part of the community since 1858.

The previous pavilion, built in 1950, required extensive upgrades to meet provincial standards. It was torn down last week. Construction of the new hall is expected to begin next week

Plans call for new hall to be completed in time for the Burford fall fair, which takes place on the Thanksgiving weekend.

The hall has been a big part of the community, said Jones, adding that it is used by numerous community groups.

Last month, Brant County council supported providing a $50,000 loan to help get the project off the ground. Plans call for the construction of a new 7,000-square-foot building for $700,000. As of last month, pledges of about $500,000 in cash and in-kind assistance had come in.

Move like an octopus: Underwater propulsion from a 3-D printer

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Octopods, which are also known as octopuses or squid, generally move along the ocean floor with their eight arms, they flee by swimming head-first, in line with the principles of propulsion. When the mollusk does this, water is taken into its mantle, which is then closed by contracting sphincter muscles. The water is then squirted back out at a high pressure through a funnel. The resulting propulsion pushes the octopus forward in the opposite direction. By changing the position of the funnel, the octopus can precisely steer its direction of travel. For researchers this intelligent propulsion principle served as a role model for the development of an underwater propulsion system.

Cyber attacks on stock exchanges put markets at risk: report

By John McCrank

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Around half of the world's securities exchanges were the target of cyber-attacks last year, according to a paper based on a survey of 46 exchanges released on Tuesday.

The prevalence of attacks along with the interconnected nature of the markets creates the potential for widespread impact, said the joint staff working paper by the International Organization of Securities Commissions' (IOSCO) research department and the World Federation of Exchanges Office.

"There could be systemic impacts ... from cyber attacks in the securities markets, especially considering that our financial system is relying more and more on technological infrastructure," the report's author, Rohini Tendulkar of the IOSCO Research Department, said in an interview.

Among the exchanges surveyed, 53 percent said they experienced a cyber attack last year. The most common forms were Denial of Service attacks, which seek to disrupt websites and other computer systems by overwhelming the targeted organizations' networks with computer traffic, and viruses.

Other forms of cyber-crimes reported by the exchanges included laptop theft, website scanning, data theft, and insider information theft. None of the exchanges reported financial theft as part of the attacks.

"Cyber-crime also appears to be increasing in terms of sophistication and complexity, widening the potential for infiltration and large-scale damage," the report said, adding that a major attack could result in widespread public mistrust and a retreat from the markets.

In Britain, worries over hacking and other cyber attacks have pushed aside the euro zone crisis as the top risk for that country's banks, a senior Bank of England official said last month.

In the United States, exchange operators Nasdaq OMX Group and BATS Global Markets said in February of last year that they were targeted with denial of service attacks. In October 2011, NYSE Euronext's New York Stock Exchange's website was inaccessible for 30 minutes, according to an Internet monitoring company, but the exchange said there was no interruption of service.

And in 2010, hackers who infiltrated Nasdaq's computer systems installed malicious software that allowed them to spy on the directors of publicly held companies, Reuters reported.

There is limited data on the costs of cyber-crime to securities markets, but the paper said a number of studies have looked at the costs of cyber-crime to society as a whole, with estimates ranging between $388 billion to $1 trillion.

The exchanges in the survey said the direct and indirect cost of cyber-attacks cost them each less than $1 million last year.

A spokeswoman for BATS said on Tuesday the exchange operator invests heavily in proactive security technology, and has made some significant hires on the security side, though for competitive and security issues, she could not give more details.

Nasdaq and NYSE declined to comment.

The lack of widely available insurance against cyber-crime adds to the risk, as nearly four in five exchanges would have to bear the costs of a major attack themselves, the survey found.

The 58-page report said the survey of exchanges was the first of a series of surveys on cyber-crime across different types of securities market actors.

Correction of Moisture and Sucrose Effective Diffusivities for Shrinkage during Osmotic Dehydration of Apple in Sucrose Solution

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.sciencedirect.com --- Saturday, July 13, 2013
Publication date: Available online 12 July 2013 Source: Food and Bioproducts Processing Author(s): B. Abbasi Souraki , M. Ghavami , H. Tondro Shrinkage, moisture and sucrose effective diffusivities were correlated for infinite slab shape samples of Apple during osmotic dehydration in sucrose solution. Experiments were carried out in the sucrose solutions of different concentrations (30%, 40% and 50%) and temperatures (30 ?C, 40?C and 50?C). The two parameter model, developed by Azuara et al. (1992) , was used to predict water loss and solid gain at equilibrium condition. Moisture and sucrose diffusivities were estimated by fitting the experimental moisture loss and solid gain data to the modified form of Fick's second law of diffusion, considering the shrinkage of the apples during osmotic dehydration. Results showed that the volume of the samples decreased linearly with water loss (WL) and weight reduction (WR). For above conditions of osmotic dehydration, effective diffusivities without considering the shrinkage were found to be in the range of 1.36 ? 10 ?10 m 2 /s?2.00 ? 10 ?10 m 2 /s, and those with considering the shrinkage were in the range of 0.87 ? 10 ?10 m 2 /s?1.27 ? 10 ?10 m 2 /s. The values of the effective diffusivities estimated by considering the shrinkage were smaller than those without considering this phenomenon. ...

Judge finds Apple went against anti-trust laws in e-book price-fixing case

US District Judge Denise Cote found that Apple was part of a conspiracy to increase e-book retail prices. An Apple spokesperson maintained that 'we've done nothing wrong.'

US District Judge Denise Cote ruled in New York that Apple was involved in a conspiracy to increase e-book retail prices, siding with the US Department of Justice.

?Apple chose to join forces with the publisher defendants to raise e-book prices and equipped them with the means to do so," Cote wrote in her decision. "Without Apple's orchestration of this conspiracy, it would not have succeeded as it did.?

An Apple spokesperson, however, told the Wall Street Journal ?we?ve done nothing wrong.?

?Apple did not conspire to fix ebook pricing and we will continue to fight against these false accusations," the spokesperson, who was not named, said. "When we introduced the iBookstore in 2010, we gave customers more choice, injecting much needed innovation and competition into the market, breaking Amazon's monopolistic grip on the publishing industry? we will appeal the judge's decision.?

Meanwhile, Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer, who is in charge of the antitrust division of the Justice Department, applauded the verdict.

?Companies cannot ignore the antitrust laws when they believe it is in their economic self-interest to do so," Baer said in a statement. "This decision by the court is a critical step in undoing the harm caused by Apple's illegal actions.?

The five publishers who were accused with Apple, including Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins, had all settled previously. The publishers and Apple had reportedly worked to raise prices in order to be able to compete with online bookselling giant Amazon. The Department of Justice claimed Apple convinced the publishers to go with the ?agency model,? in which the publisher would decide the price of an e-book rather than the retailer selling it. During the case, evidence presented included communications from the late Apple founder Steve Jobs.

As reported by Monitor writer Husna Haq, some thought Cote might side with Apple when she said, ?I thought I had prepared so well? when closing the trial.

?I learned a lot,? Cote continued. ?But you have helped me understand so much more through the evidence.?

According to the Department of Justice, the conspiracy between Apple and the publishers cut down on competition in the e-book industry.

50 Debunked Science Misconceptions Will Make You Less Dumb

Being an enlightened individual means understanding basic scientific information about how the world works. Sure, we have teachers and parents there to fill our brains with knowledge, but the sad truth is that there are certain facts that take on a life of their own as they pass from ear to ear, eventually etching themselves into our collective brain-mass in twisted forms that are, well, just plain wrong.

Samsung offers $4 million bounty to populate Tizen app store

Samsung has over $4 million up for grabs to entice would-be developers toward its Tizen mobile OS. If you're feeling crafty -- and who isn't futzing in the garage these days? -- you have until November 1st to submit an app based on the South Korean giant's upstart ecosystem. Games take the lion's share of the prize, with the top title walking away with $200K out of the category's $340K. The winning non-game application (music, social networking, et cetera) takes home $120K, and the 10 best HTML 5-based apps each net $50K. While we've seen this sort of stunt before, the end results typically speak for themselves.

Windows out of touch as PC shipments crash

All manufacturers bar Lenovo showed a massive decline in PC sales in the second quarter of the year, with buyers continuing to purchase tablets over laptop devices, according to Gartner?s latest PC market share research.

PC shipments in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) were weakened in the second quarter of 2013, with a 16.8% decline over the same period last year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of decreasing shipments, said Gartner.

Ranjit Atwal research director at Gartner, said: ?The European economy has not helped. Touch on laptops today has not been as effective for consumers. Touchscreens will only come into their own at end of this year with the availability of the new Intel [Haswell] platform.??

Haswell ?will introduce "thin and light" laptop designs, which Atwal expects will help to stimulate the PC industry.?

He said part of the problem with the PC sector is a lack of innovation, in spite of the launch of Windows 8 last year: ?The PC industry has not really innovated for the last five years. Windows 8 was an evolution rather than revolution.??

But this is slowly changing, according to Atwal, with some PC manufacturers building software around their hardware platform in order to differentiate products.

?The sharp decline in the second quarter of 2013 was partly due to the shift in usage patterns away from notebooks to tablets, and partly because the PC market was exposed to inventory reductions in the channel due to the start of the transition to new Haswell-based products,? said Isabelle Durand, principal research analyst at Gartner.?

"Touch-based notebooks still account for less than 10% of the total consumer notebook shipments in the last quarter."

HP held the top position in EMEA, Garter said, due to better results in the professional PC market. Lenovo was the only top five vendor to exhibit shipment growth, recording a fourth consecutive quarter of growth.

?The PC market is changing, but it still represents a $200bn opportunity,? said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO, Lenovo.

Hibs academy coach vows to keep unearthing gems

As he proudly watched eight of his youth academy prot?g?es graduate to Hibs boss Pat Fenlon?s first-team squad, James McDonaugh was suddenly struck by the thought: ?How do you follow that??

It?s going to be a daunting task for the Easter Road outfit?s head of academy coaching, having played a part over the past few years in putting Alex Harris, Danny Handling, Ross Cadlwell, Jordon Forster, Sammy Stanton, Bradley Donaldson, Dean Horribine and David Gold on the first rung to what he hopes will be successful careers.

But today McDonaugh insisted he?s up for the challenge as he begins steering the latest intake of young hopefuls in the same direction, while admitting it will be nigh on impossible to repeat the remarkable achievement of the past few months, arguing that to have so many step up at the one time is the exception ?rather than the rule.

He said: ?There is that bit thinking ?how do you follow that?, but you have to try. You could easily say ?that?s brilliant? and stand back and watch them, but you want to try again. This year was quite an exciting time for me because I had a lot of those players for the best part of five years, which you don?t really get as a youth coach.

?I have kind of grown up with them a wee bit and they have grown with me. Now it is about starting again with a young group. What we have is a bit of time because of their age. They have time on their side which is good. Already you can tell they are not of the standard, obviously, as those who have moved up, so we are going to have to show a bit of patience, help them along and I am sure one or two will get there in the end.?

At a club renowned for producing home-grown talent, McDonaugh has been aware of the debate among some fans as to the value of Hibs? ??5 million training centre at East Mains, the point having been made that the ?golden generation? of Garry O?Connor, Derek Riordan, Kevin Thomson, Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker made the breakthrough without having the advantage of such lavish facilities. As McDonaugh pointed out, though, there has been something of a state of flux manager-wise at Easter Road with John Collins? shock resignation within 24 hours of East Mains being formally opened being followed in quick succession by Mixu Paatelainen, John Hughes, Colin Calderwood and now Pat Fenlon in the hot-seat.

Changes, too, were made in the academy set-up, with ?McDonaugh replacing Alistair Stevenson, but now, with Fenlon beginning his second full season in charge while he himself is two-and-a-half years into his own job, he believes that continuity will bear further fruit.

He said: ?A lot of people use that phrase ?conveyor belt? and everyone wants that, but it?s not as easy as that. I think if you ask any manager they?d be delighted with just one good one coming through to the first team, not someone who will make his debut and play a few games but someone who will hold down a first-team place.

?Obviously we are looking to be a bit more greedy than that. I?m pretty sure there won?t be eight coming through next season, but if you get one or two then one or two the next year again then over a period of time it?s still a very good number. There has been a lot spoken about the training centre and how we produced players without it, but the club has made a fantastic investment and everyone here appreciates it.

?It takes time. There have been a lot of changes at the club over a period of time, the manager, for example, has changed a number of times and even me taking over from Alistair means there?s been change at the academy. When a new manager comes in he needs to get results quickly, but perhaps things have settled down a bit ? the manager must have liked them and ?opportunities have come.?

While delighted to see so many of his young charges make the step up, McDonaugh is well aware that doesn?t guarantee any of them instant stardom, as evidenced by the fact David Wotherspoon?s departure for St Johnstone ?last week means that of the under-19 side which enjoyed League and Cup success just a few years ago, only Callum Booth remains at the club ? and he?s set for another season out on loan.

And, he agreed, it was up to each individual to go on and carve out a career for himself. He said: ?The likes of Alex, Danny, Brad and Sammy are still eligible to play under-20 football this season and if we still had them I think we?d have a fantastic team, perhaps capable of winning the [Under-20] league.

?But we are not in the game to win that league, we are in it to get them into the first team and, in my eyes, they are now in that first-team group. One or two might be regulars, one or two might go out on loan or they might be squad players but it?s up to them whether they take their chance as they are certainly under the manager and Jimmy Nicholl now.

?Moving from the youth changing-room to the first team changing-room is a big step, they have to be able to stand on their own two feet, but it was pleasing to have each of them at my door talking about the season they?ve had and how they feel they have improved and thanking the coaches for that. What gives you job satisfaction is seeing those boys going on to play first-team football.?

So how does McDonaugh go about even attempting to emulate such an impressive achievement? The answer is quite simple ? more of the same, as he looks forward to working with a beefed-up squad, one which will number 20 rather than 15, again, he ?insists, an investment in the future by the club.

Having lost so many youngsters, the net has been cast far and wide to augment those kids who will be stepping up from lower age levels with Tom Gardiner recruited from Spurs, Edinburgh boy Taylor Hendry returning to the Capital from Ipswich, while Cody Mulhall and Gareth McCaffrey have arrived from Ireland.

McDonaugh said: ?There?s perhaps something more special about getting a local boy who might be a supporter, but I have always said it doesn?t matter where they come from.

?Cody and Gareth have been capped for their country, but they are just turning 17 and have never been at a professional club, so it is a big step and it would be unfair asking big things of them in such a short space of time. Then people say because Tom was with Spurs he must be a player, but what we see in each of them is potential.

?If they were ready for the first team then the manager would be signing them and that?s not the case. We?ll be following the same sort of programme as in the past and if they take on board the information they are given, work hard and do things properly, then they will have a good chance.?

Microsoft announces MSN TV shutdown, formerly WebTV

Microsoft has announced the closure of its MSN TV service, formerly known as WebTV, on September 30th

Customers have been e-mailed informing them that the service will officially shutdown on September 30th.

Microsoft's TV service, MSN TV was rebranded from WebTV back in 2001, after buying it in mid-1997 for $503 million.

The Internet Media Player came with a battery-operated wireless remote and wireless keyboard, telephone line T-splitter, 25" phone cord, 6" audio/video cable and a power supply.

Some of MSN TV's technology has been used for the Xbox, and the TV unit went on to do Mediaroom, set-top box software used by AT&T for U-verse, AllThingsD reports.

Microsoft has said, "the Web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the Internet. Accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to end the MSN TV service."

Microsoft did release MSN TV 2 with enhanced features and power but alternative devices such as Apple TV bring competition.

Instructions for a seamless transition were outlined in the company's e-mail to existing customers.

Users must copy favourites and Scrapbook photos over to SkyDrive. If a customer uses their MSN TV e-mail address they will need to upgrade to Microsoft's Outlook.com which replaced Hotmail in order to keep the e-mail functioning.

Microsoft will be offering special deals on MSN Dial-up and Premium serivces.

Obama: US not backing any Egyptian party or group

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Saturday reiterated that the U.S. is not aligned with and is not supporting any particular Egyptian political party or group and again condemned the ongoing violence across Egypt.

Obama made those points during a telephone conference with the National Security Council about developments in Egypt, according to a statement issued by the White House. He was spending the weekend at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

"The United States categorically rejects the false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt's transition should proceed," the White House statement said. "We remain committed to the Egyptian people and their aspirations for democracy, economy opportunity and dignity. But the future path of Egypt can only be determined by the Egyptian people."

The White House statement repeated key assertions Obama and other U.S. officials have made since the Egyptian military ousted the democratically elected president of Egypt, calling for an inclusive process allowing for all groups and parties to participate, urging all Egyptian leaders to condemn the use of force and to prevent further violence, and urging demonstrators to conduct themselves peacefully.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke again Saturday to Egypt's defense minister, emphasizing the need for a peaceful civilian transition in Egypt and noting "the importance of security for the Egyptian people, Egypt's neighbors and the region," the Defense Department said in a statement.

Hagel also spoke to Crown Prince Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates on Saturday to discuss Egypt and "matters of mutual security concern in the Middle East," Pentagon press secretary George Little said in the statement.

Secretary of State John Kerry has been in touch hourly with the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, Anne W. Patterson, and has spoken in the last two days to officials in the region, the State Department said in a statement.

In a separate statement, Kerry said the U.S. is "deeply troubled" by the violence across Egypt.

"We strongly condemn any and all incitement to violence or attempts to divide and provoke, rather than unite, all Egyptians. The United States strongly condemns the violence by all parties and urges calm," Kerry said.

"The United States wants to see Egypt's ongoing transition succeed for the benefit of the Egyptian people," he added. "The Egyptians themselves must come together and make the tough decisions necessary for that to happen."

Slow Motion X-Ray Footage Reveals the Secrets of Bat Wings

Slow Motion X-Ray Footage Reveals the Secrets of Bat Wings

If you happen to see a bat flying around you in real life, it's easy to panic and not see much of anything but a vague blur as you cover your head and cower. But they're actually pretty graceful when you really look at them. And new slow motion, x-ray footage just goes to show it in even greater detail, all while revealing one of the creature's high-flying secrets.

When Nicolai Konow of Brown University and his team of biologists carefully filmed some bats, they found that the little guys' extra stretchy tendons are the key to all the magic.

Smithsonian Magazine explains:

The team specifically looked at a species called Seba?s short-tailed bat, and used technology called XROMM (X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology) that integrates three-dimensional renderings of bone structure into X-ray video, allowing for detailed analysis of muscle mechanics and anatomy during an animal?s movement. Their analysis ...showed that the bats first stretch out the tendons that anchor their biceps and triceps muscles to their bones, then compress the tendons to release energy and power their flight upward.

Global shares directionless amid poor Europe data

PARIS (AP) ? Global shares struggled to find direction Tuesday as indications Europe's economy is still in trouble competed with hopes that the U.S. central bank wasn't quite finished with its stimulus.

Industrial producer prices fell 0.3 percent in May in the 17 European Union countries that use the euro, Eurostat reported Tuesday. While that shows costs are falling, it also indicates manufacturing activity remains weak.

Meanwhile, Spain announced Tuesday that the number of people registered as unemployed dropped for a fourth consecutive month in June ? but the country has a long way to go to bring its jobless rate down to normal levels. It currently stands at 27.2 percent.

A separate report on Monday showed the unemployment rate in the eurozone was at 12.1 percent in May, its highest level ever.

"While the European economy appears to be starting to show flickers of recovery particularly in Spain and Italy where the manufacturing sector appears to be showing signs of coming off life support, the unemployment picture remains disturbingly high," said Michael Hewson, a market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

By midday in Europe, France's CAC-40 was down 0.9 percent to 3,735 while the DAX in Germany was off 1.2 percent to 7,885. The FTSE index of British shares dropped 0.6 percent at 6,269.

By contrast, lackluster data in the U.S. comforted American and many Asian markets over the past day ? since it indicated the U.S. Federal Reserve would move slowly to reduce its purchases of financial assets that have buoyed markets by pushing down interest rates.

On Monday, Wall Street rallied after an ISM manufacturing survey for the U.S. that showed a weak rebound in June thanks to new orders and higher production. The survey boosted stock markets as investors estimated it was strong enough to show the recovery is on track, but not so strong as to encourage the Fed to start ending its monetary stimulus program ahead of time.

U.S. markets were expected to open higher Tuesday. Dow and S&P futures were both up 0.2 percent, at 14,914 1,610.20 respectively.

Many Asian stocks rose earlier in the day. Tokyo's Nikkei 225, the region's heavyweight index, jumped 1.8 percent to 14,098.74. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 2.6 percent at 4,834.00 after the country's central bank left interest rates unchanged and said the Australian dollar is likely to continue falling, easing pressure on exports.

In China, the Shanghai Composite Index reversed early losses to rise 0.6 percent to 2,006.56 after reports on Monday that Chinese manufacturing weakened in June amid a credit crunch. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.7 percent to 20,658.65, led by Chinese banks, which are facing central bank credit restrictions.

Meanwhile, benchmark oil for August delivery rose 16 cents to $98.15 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.43 to close at $97.99 a barrel on Monday.

The euro fell to $1.3030 from $1.3065 late Monday in New York.

Spotify for iPhone gets the Discover tab, What's New being confined to history

Spotify has pushed out an update to their iOS app with a bunch of new features ? mainly for the iPhone ? with the addition of the new Discover tab top of the list. The now playing view is also getting some polish, and there's a shiny new icon to boot as well. There's plenty going on, the new stuff looks a little like this:

  • New: Ever find yourself wondering what to play on Spotify? Introducing the new Discover experience on iPhone. (Coming soon to everyone.)
  • New: A shiny, new Now Playing view, featuring the 'Up Next' queue on iPhone. (Again, rolling out to everyone soon.)
  • New: Say hello to our new logo.
  • New: You can now edit your playlists on your iPhone.

There's also a bunch of fixes and general improvements, but it's really all about the Discover tab. One the one hand, it's a great tool to have; just yesterday I was bemoaning the lack of any discovery aspect to Microsoft's Xbox Music web player. But, in the case of Spotify, the Discover tab comes at the expense of the previous "What's New" section of the app. I like "What's New," so I'm not so happy about it disappearing. It's still there in the desktop player and the iPad version, but not in the iPhone app or the web player, the two I use the most. The iPad doesn't yet have Discover.

Discover does what it says on the tin. It tracks what you listen to and makes suggestions based on that, on your location, or just music that is popular enough for it to think you might like a listen. What's New used to show top tracks and playlists in your area, and show you the newest additions to the catalog. That's now gone, and I for one miss it. New features are great, but not always at the expense of something existing. Especially with no mention before hand.

The latest version of Spotify is available to download now from the App Store, and I'm eager to find out what you guys think of it. Is Discover worthy enough of losing the What's New tab, or like me, do you wish it would come back?
