Pro Football Hall of Fame: How are players nominated?

The Pro Football Hall of Fame will announce its 2012 class on Saturday, the day before Super Bowl XLVI. We take a look at the nomination process.

Who deserves to get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?? We?ve made our picks (to see them, click below). Whether they match the official annual selections, which are announced each year the day before the Super Bowl, remains to be seen.

But before getting to the Monitor?s choices, some background and comments are in order.

First, an interesting fact: Anyone may nominate a player, coach, or contributor simply by writing to the hall in Canton, Ohio. It says so right on the shrine?s website. The only stipulation is that players and coaches be retired for at least five years.

Submitting a nomination, of course, only begins the winnowing process handled by a 44-member Selection Committee composed mostly of football writers from each NFL city. These guys (they?re all men) are known to local readers, but they are no-names nationally. You won?t find big-name sportscasters like Joe Buck and Al Michaels among them.??

This committee does its work quietly and the selections are generally met with far less buzz than in baseball.? Why?? Partly because baseball, with its many player statistics, lends itself far better to hot-stove debates about the game?s immortals. ?In football, how?s one to gauge an offensive lineman?

Also, there are more than 1,000 media types eligible to cast ballots in voting for the baseball hall conducted by the Baseball Writers? Association of America. Many of these voters share how they?ve voted in columns and blogs that bring a lot of attention to the selection process.

The football selectors, on the other hand, are a small coterie who via a series of votes narrow the field from 105 preliminary nominees (this year), to 26 semifinalists, to 17 finalists this year, including two old-timers. When the group meets in Indianapolis Saturday, they vote on the Class of 2012 enshrinees. There is no set number that gets in, but the ground rules recommend three to seven new Hall of Famers each year, including any players nominated by a Seniors Committee.

The fewest ever ushered in was three, in 1973 and 1976.? Last year?s class had seven members: Richard Dent, Marshall Faulk, Chris Hanburger, Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe, Les Richter, and Ed Sabol, who was voted in as a contributor for being the guiding force behind NFL Films.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame itself only facilitates the selection process, but does not participate in it.?

Will "Smash" splash or crash for NBC? (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? NBC's new musical drama "Smash" could hardly have a stronger pedigree: Idea by Steven Spielberg, songs by award-winning Broadway producers, stars including Anjelica Huston and Debra Messing, and screen icon Marilyn Monroe holding the whole show-within-a show together.

Yet success couldn't be harder to assess in the high stakes prime-time TV gamble for NBC as the struggling network looks for its first scripted series hit since 2006.

"You can't pin a network's fate on any one show. But having said that, if you ever could, it would be this network and this show," said James Hibberd, senior staff writer at Entertainment Weekly.

"Smash", which makes its debut on Monday, is a backstage tale of writers, directors, producers and aspiring actresses working to create a new Broadway musical based on the life of Monroe.

The idea came from Spielberg, and the show is being written by playwright Theresa Rebeck ("Seminar"). It features both cover versions of hit songs and original material written by "Hairspray" Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

TV viewers have seen nothing quite like "Smash" in recent years. Show-stopping musical numbers are interspersed with darker casting couch moments and theatrical back-stabbing, giving industry watchers little to compare it with.

"It's the type of show that could either be a huge hit, or just go down in flames. It's a little bit different," said Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research at advertising firm Horizon Media.

"GLEE" FOR KIDS. "SMASH" FOR ADULTS

While "Glee" -- the quirky musical comedy about singing high school kids that gave Fox a surprise worldwide hit three years ago -- opened the door for more TV musicals, "Smash" is a drama, set in an adult world.

"'Glee' caught lightning in a bottle and was so smart to target the 'American Idol' and 'High School Musical' audience by setting it in a high school. Putting 'Smash' in a more grown-up landscape asks whether you can deliver on this genre in an older setting," said Hibberd.

Spielberg, who producers say has been very closely involved in the script and editing, believes there is enough tension in the creative process to make "Smash" interesting to all-comers.

"I think audiences will be able to relate to (it) whether or not they ever had seen a Broadway show because this is really about the drama of the characters," the Oscar-winning director told TV reporters in a January video message.

NBC, which has been mired for years at the bottom of the four biggest U.S. networks, is leaving nothing to chance.

The "Smash" pilot was screened in 10 major cities and on American Airlines flights in January. The network has been streaming the first episode on its website and on Hulu, and made it available to download on iTunes, PlayStation and other platforms three weeks before Monday's official premiere.

The network is desperately in need of a hit after what entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt admitted last month was "a really bad fall". Pricey new dramas "The Playboy Club," "Prime Suspect" and comedy "Free Agents" were swiftly cancelled, and audiences in the 18-49 demographic prized by advertisers fell 11 percent.

"'Smash' is going to be very important to us, but I don't believe it is a make or break show," Greenblatt told TV reporters in January. If it doesn't work, "it's not like we are going to go into receivership."

Adgate said a hit for "Smash" would be "a nice stepping stone" for NBC, which will be lucky to have a show in the Top 20 once football ends its season with this weekend's Super Bowl.

"Some of their hit shows are starting to fray at the edges. 'The Office' is down a bit, 'Law & Order' and 'The Biggest Loser' have all been down this year," he said.

"They really have to bolster their programming with at least some shows that can build appointment viewing, and be used as a platform to promote their line-up. I think 'Smash' is a show along with singing talent show 'The Voice' that NBC is really counting on to turn the ship around this quarter," Adgate said.

Libya's "hostages of war" (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? 'Fitna' is widely used in Arabic but difficult to translate directly into English. Roughly defined, it means the intentional stirring of chaos between people.

Fitna is why Muammar Gaddafi occupied the town of Tawergha, held its residents hostage and used it as a base to besiege and shell the coastal city of Misrata in last year's civil war, refugee Kareem al-Barra said.

"He wanted to turn Libyans on each other, to divide and rule," said Barra, one of thousands of displaced black Libyans who have suffered revenge attacks from victorious anti-Gaddafi forces since the war ended.

Barra and his family were forced from their homes and driven out of Tawergha in August, and now live in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Benghazi.

"We consider ourselves war hostages," he told Reuters.

Gaddafi's strategy last year stirred suspicion and hatred between the ethnically Arab people of Misrata and the black Libyans in Tawergha, refugees say. It worked so well that even after the dictator's death, it interferes with Libya's new rulers focus on rebuilding and reconciliation.

Although no-one here will admit it, a number of Tawergha's residents did serve voluntarily in the Gaddafi forces. Barra says his people are being persecuted for that supposed collaboration and being mistaken for the sub-Saharan African mercenaries who fought for Gaddafi in the war.

"Everyone wants to return but we are too scared. The rebels from Misrata think we fought with Gaddafi, but we were trapped inside Tawergha," Barra said, sitting in a corrugated iron building at the centre of Gargounis camp, one of five camps in Benghazi that house more than 19,000 Tawergha residents.

"Now (fighters from Misrata) are still destroying Tawergha and attacking black Libyans on sight."

The more than 28,000 displaced people from Tawergha and its surrounding villages add to the difficulties of Libya's interim rulers tasked with creating a democratic state from scratch.

In addition to addressing the refugee issue, the National Transitional Council (NTC) must quell regular clashes between rival militias, bring down youth unemployment and secure its borders against arms traffickers, al Qaeda insurgents and migrants trying to reach Europe illegally.

Elections are promised for June, but many here say they will have to be pushed back.

GADDAFI BRIGADES IN TAWERGHA

Barra paints a dark picture of life in Tawergha when Gaddafi's forces set up a base there at the start of the war in February 2011.

The electrical engineer-turned-refugee says 12,000 Gaddafi-loyal soldiers arrived in the quiet coastal town over the course of two nights.

"They were all black like us, some of them African mercenaries and some from Saba city, in Libya's Sahara desert," Barra explained, gesturing vividly with his hands.

"They seized fuel and set up checkpoints, making it impossible to escape," he added. A few tried one night but were caught, given on-the-spot trials and found guilty of treason: "Seven entire families were killed. Nobody could get out and if people were sick or injured, they would die in the street."

Other men from Tawergha, sitting idle in the refugee camps in Benghazi, said Gaddafi promised the town's elders that he would turn the city into a "paradise" after the war.

"Really he was scared about the rebels reaching Sirte," said a volunteer from a local religious charity working at the camp, referring to Gaddafi's hometown where he was killed in October.

Tawergha, known for its fertile soil and salt mines, lay between Misrata and Sirte.

After five months, the Misrata rebels pushed the brigades out of Tawergha, but raised hell as they did, Barra said.

"Then the Misrata problem started," he said, his eyes focused on the memory. "There were revenge attacks in retaliation for the siege of Misrata. People were killed in front of their families. The entire city fled between August and October."

Once inhabited by almost 30,000 people, Tawergha is now a ghost town. Horses, camels and goats roam the streets, feeding on rubbish and shrubs.

Above the doorways and windows of each of the concrete buildings -- some five or six storeys high -- black soot from fires paints the wall. Houses are splattered with bullet holes and many buildings have collapsed. The detritus of spent rockets-propelled grenades line the streets.

Human Rights Watch's emergencies director Peter Bouckaert, who has worked on and off in Libya since the war started, said Misrata rebels have looted and destroyed homes in Tawergha as well as the neighboring farming villages of Kararim and Tomina.

"Every time we visit the area, we have witnessed rebels looting and burning homes," he told Reuters.

"The civilian and military leadership should remember that the International Criminal Court has full jurisdiction over war crimes being committed in Libya, and forcibly displacing a civilian population and destroying their homes are war crimes."

REVENGE ATTACKS

At a second refugee camp in Benghazi, Tawergha resident Ahmed Ali Farhat has been documenting abuses against his countrymen as the "fitna" continues.

"People fled from Tawergha to all over Libya, but they are still being harassed, especially by roaming Misrata rebels who pursue them," the elderly man told Reuters as he walked through the camp, the grounds of a empty cement factory.

"Two days ago some rebels from Misrata roughed up some Tawergha here in Benghazi," he said. A line of black men stood waiting in front of a USAID truck handing out clothes nearby.

"Another group of eight Tawergha people were caught in Sirte. One was stamped to death," he said. He plans to file a report on the incident to the interim government.

As rain started to beat down, Farhat looked at his townsmen, miles from home and cowering under makeshift huts. He was pessimistic Libya would address the atrocities committed before and after the war, or that he would ever be able to return home.

"There is no security as the Libyan government is still not in control of the country," Farhat said. "They have not looked seriously at our case."

Firefox 10 out now: full screen apps, fewer crashes, disappearing forward button

The tenth iteration of Mozilla's browser is rolling out from today and we're sat here waiting for our own go signal. As the biggest UI tweaks will arrive in v12, the majority of changes are under the hood: except that the "forward" button now only appears once you've pressed "back." New APIs provide for full-screen viewing of web apps, Anti-aliased WebGL graphics and an "extended support release" that enables enterprise customers to only download security updates. CSS 3D Transitions are now supported alongside a new CSS inspector for those digging deep into the fabric of the universe internet. Java applet and moving bookmarks crashes should be a thing of the past, but it's not all plain sailing: no new release ever is, after all. On the "to be fixed" list includes herky-jerky scrolling in Gmail, Silverlight videos not working in OS X and vertical scrolling is broken on some touch-pads. Let's hope they get the former fixed quickly, our inbox is already overflowing 'round these parts.

Update: The Mozilla blog has posted a quick demo video of how the new tools can help developers, check it out after the break.
