From the downfall of North African regimes to the humanitarian interventions in Ivory Coast and Libya, 2011 appears to have been the year when citizens and leaders took a stand on human rights.?

Three major dictatorships have fallen across North Africa ? in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya ? at least partly at the hands of their own people. Citizen protests spread as far away as Bahrain and Yemen, Malawi and Swaziland, and while Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has held onto power through a brutal repression that has killed thousands of Syrians, it has come at the cost of his country?s economic and political isolation.

Numbered are the days, at least in Africa, when leaders could simply grab and hold onto power perpetually through falsified elections. Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo tried that, after losing elections to Alessane Ouattara, and a combination of street protests and pro-Ouattara military might (along with some French military intervention) shut Gbagbo?s power grab down. This week, as the Democratic Republic of Congo enters a dicey period, where two men ? President Joseph Kabila and opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi ? claim to have won Nov. 28 elections, the international community will doubtless attempt to find a negotiated settlement, after election observers have declared that voting results ?lack credibility.?

In this week?s Atlantic, Stewart M. Patrick of the Council on Foreign Relations lists some of these successes and notes that the key ingredient in all these struggles is a galvanized popular will for the respect of human rights. Quoting the findings of a global opinion survey by worldpublicopinion.org, Mr. Patrick notes that citizens even in authoritarian countries are beginning to demand more and more freedom.

Winona Ryder Joins The Iceman

Winona Ryder has been added to the cast of The Iceman, one of two dueling projects based on the life of fabled Mafia hitman Richard ?The Iceman? Kuklinski.? Ryder will be playing Kuklinski?s wife, who along with their daughters, had no idea that her husband, a loving family man, was leading a double life as a cold-blooded murderer for the mob. She is reportedly replacing actress Maggie Gyllenhaal in the role.

Ryder joins a cast that already includes Chris Evans (The Avengers) and Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire).

The Iceman is based on Anthony Bruno?s best-selling book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer. Chris Evans will play Robert Pronge, Kuklinski?s mentor in murder, while Shannon will play Kuklinski.? The Iceman is slated to come out next year.

This news puts The Iceman deeper into development than its rival film on the same subject, entitled The Ice Man, an adaptation of Phillip Carlo?s acclaimed book, that is set to star Mickey Rourke as Kuklinski. David McKenna (Blow, American History X) has been hired to pen that script, but no director has been announced, nor has a release date been set.

(the role Evans will play).

Ratings: Regis Philbin's farewell lifts "Live!" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Like the consummate professional and gentleman that he is, Regis Philbin left a significant present behind on his way out the door on "Live! With Regis and Kelly."

Philbin's last episode on "Live! With Regis and Kelly" enjoyed a massive bump in the ratings, according to preliminary household numbers. Friday's "Live!" -- which marked his final day of co-hosting since he signed on in 1988 -- drew an average 7.3 household rating in 56 metered markets.

To put that in perspective, that's about two-and-a-half times the 2.9 rating that the show received during last November's sweep, and nearly twice the numbers that the show has posted overall for this year's November sweep.

Philbin's farewell episode did particularly well in Atlanta, where it posted a 10.6 household rating; Louisville, where it received a 10.7, and Dayton, Ohio, where the episode posted a 17.1 percent.

Friday's episode was the culmination of a six-week growth spurt for the show, as audiences prepared to bid adieu to the veteran host. From an average 2.7 rating in the metered markets on the week of October 10-14, the show built, eventually rising to an average 4.6 rating for Philbin's final week.
