Beginner Bodyweight Workout Plan - Monthly Workout | GB ...

Welcome to my November 2012 monthly workout!

It?s that time of the month when I like to offer you one of my special workouts. This month, due to popular demand, I?ve decided to go for a Bodyweight Workout for beginners.

Yoga Squat in Bodyweight Workout

Greg during the bottom half of the Yoga Squat

Bodyweight Workouts are for Everyone

No matter who you are or how fit you feel, the ability to move your body through fundamental movement patterns is the key to a pain free life and disease free body.

When you move correctly you pump all those great nutrients through the body. It is this pumping mechanism that helps you to energise and heal quicker from aches and pains as fresh blood with nutrients washes through your body.

Using bodyweight exercise is the best place to start with any exercise program. It is totally natural and providing you use the correct exercises limits your chances of injury.

Today?s exercise program is dedicated to everyone!

No matter what level you have achieved with your health and fitness this workout program will help to develop your fundamental movement skills. Many advanced exercisers develop bad habits and so find this workout beneficial for getting back to basics.

If you are looking for fat loss then this program is certainly the best place to start. These exercises are all full body movements that incorporate 100?s of muscles at a time so when done correctly will increase your metabolism and prepare your body for more vigorous exercise at a later date. Be sure to add my all natural nutrition plan to get the most fat loss from this program.

So to recap this program is good for:

  • The total beginner just starting out with exercise
  • The exerciser who has been ?off games? for a while
  • The sportsman looking to take a break from sports for a month
  • The seasoned athlete who is experiencing aches and pains
  • Those looking for fat loss and to complement a good nutrition plan

Please Take Precautions

Before you dive into this workout program I just want you to STOP and THINK. If you have any conditions that you think will put your health in jeopardy by performing exercises then you should seek the advice of a trained medical practitioner or doctor before starting this program. There is nothing unnatural about this program and it will improve your health but I cannot take responsibility for any harm or injury you may cause to yourself. Please take care!

How the Workout Plan Works

I have put together 4 weeks of exercises for you. Every day is different so you will need to follow the program day by day. You will get weekends off so you will have a chance to totally recharge and not even think about exercise for a whole 2 days :-)

There are only 5 exercises that you need to practice so you should be able to get the hang of them fairly quickly although they will get more challenging as the weeks progress.

So all you have to do is start on Monday, Week 1 and then follow along, simple! No workout should take you any longer than 30 minutes.

The 4 Week Bodyweight Workout Plan

OK, so here is the 4 week workout program:

Week 1:

  • Monday: Yoga Squats
  • Tuesday: Back Extensions
  • Wednesday: Yoga Squats
  • Thursday: Push Ups
  • Friday: Back Extensions?/?Forward Lunge

Week 2:

  • Monday: Push Ups /?Back Extensions
  • Tuesday: Yoga Squats
  • Wednesday: Bird Dogs
  • Thursday:?Forward Lunge
  • Friday: Yoga Squats / Push Ups

Week 3:

  • Monday: Forward Lunge?/ Bird Dogs / Squats
  • Tuesday:?Back Extensions
  • Wednesday: Yoga Squats / Push Ups
  • Thursday: Bird Dogs
  • Friday: Forward Lunge?/ Back Extensions?/ Push Ups

Week 4:

  • Monday: Yoga Squats /?Back Extensions
  • Tuesday: Forward Lunge?/ Push Ups / Bird Dogs
  • Wednesday: Rest
  • Thursday: Forward Lunge?/ Push Ups / Yoga Squats / Bird Dogs
  • Friday:?Back Extensions

The Workout Variables

Lets now look at each exercise and see what you need to do:

Yoga Squats:

  • Reps: 5 ? 25
  • Tempo: at breathing pace

Forward Lunges:

  • Reps: 3 ? 15 each side
  • Tempo: slow & controlled

Push Ups:

  • Reps: 3 ? 20
  • Tempo: slow & controlled

Bird Dogs:

  • Reps: 5 ? 12 each side
  • Tempo: slow & controlled

Back Extensions:

  • Reps: 3 ? 8
  • Tempo: 30 second hold at top / 15 second rest

Now, lets take a look at each of the variables in turn so everything is clear:

Reps

These are the total amount of repetitions you will do of each exercise. The objective is to do as many as possible without your form failing during the exercise.

If you can manage 6 Yoga Squats but number 7 and 8 are wobbly and you struggle to finish them, you should only do 6 perfect Yoga Squats.

You need to push yourself as much as possible but only to the point of good form. As with any exercise program you are looking to progress week on week so try to perform more Reps each week.

Sets

Depending on how you find the exercise you will perform between 1 and 3 sets or circuits.

So for Monday, Week 1, you will perform as many Yoga Squats as possible, then rest, and repeat another 1 or 2 more times if you can.

If there is more than 1 exercise on that Day then you will perform one exercise after the other, then rest and repeat the exercises again another 1 or 2 times.

The Sets are listed like this to enable you to progress your workouts. Extreme beginners may only do 1 set (circuit) and more advanced may do 3.

Tempo

The speed at which you exercise is very important. Most people exercise too quickly. They do this because it is surprisingly easier. For all of the exercises above I want you to really take your time. Learn to feel the movement and the muscles in charge of the exercise. Don?t rush through, your muscles need ?time under tension?, the longer the better!

For the Yoga Squats you move at breathing pace so if you find you are losing your breath then you are going too quickly.

Rest

Once you have completed your circuit of 1 exercise or more, then it?s time to rest. Take between 1 minute and 2.5 minutes depending on how tired you feel. The less rest you can take the better but make sure you are ready for your next circuit before you start.

Why Every Day is Different?

You will notice that every day of your workout is slightly different. This is done to keep your body guessing and to speed up your progress. This type of programming is known as periodisation and this particular method is an undulating periodisation program, in case you wanted to know :-)

Warming Up

Before you start your workout you will want to warm up your joints. I don?t believe that you should stretch before your workout as this changes length tension relationships that can seriously screw with your movement patterns but you can perform some mobility.

A simple mobility routine could involve:

  • Neck: side to side, forwards and backwards, left and right
  • Shoulder Circles
  • Upper Body Twists
  • Hip Circles and Bends
  • Ankle Circles

Just run from head to toe loosing up your joints. Don?t worry too much as the 5 workout exercises will mobilise your joints as you work through them, just take your time!

The 5 Bodyweight Exercises

Yoga Squat

The Yoga Squat has to be one of my favourite squatting based movements. It works the whole body but in particular helps to loosen the hamstrings and improve mobility of the hips which most people suffer with due to excessive sitting.

This special squat also opens up the spinal vertebrae which pumps fresh blood and nutrients into the disks that helps to enliven and repair them.

Here?s a Video of How to Perform the Yoga Squat:

(Don?t listen to the final numbers that I say you should perform)

Push Ups

You can think of the Push Up as a strong core exercise. It develops the core and abs as well as improving pushing strength of the chest and arms. If you struggle to perform a single full push up then take a look at my push up tutorial article here.

Here?s a Video of How to Perform the Push Up:

(Don?t listen to the final numbers that I say you should perform)

Forward Lunge

The lunge exercise is extremely powerful and another one of those important movement patterns. It works most muscles in the body but in particular the buttocks and thighs. You may find this exercise a little bit wobbly at first, if so feel free to have a chair, table or wall close by to grab hold of if you need to steady yourself.

Here?s a Video of How to Perform the Forward Lunge:

(Don?t listen to the final numbers that I say you should perform)

Bird Dog

With the Bird Dog we are targeting the back of the body along with the buttocks and lots of the core and abdominal muscles. Form like all the other exercises is very important here. Take your time and focus on your body position through the exercise.

Here?s a Video of How to Perform the Bird Dog:

(Don?t listen to the final numbers that I say you should perform)

Back Extension

The Back Extension is a very simple exercise that again targets the back of the body but will also help to counteract all that sitting we do. If you want to improve your posture and eliminate any back pain you occasionally get then this is the answer. If you find that raising your feet and arms together is too difficult then just focus on raising your arms.

Here?s a Video of How to Perform the Back Extension:

(Don?t listen to the final numbers that I say you should perform)

Stretching After Your Workout?

You may be wondering about stretching after your workout. I personally don?t recommend it. Your nervous system is usually too fired up after exercise for stretching to be of any benefit. ?You are much better to stretch in the evening before bed if you are looking at making correctional gains in your soft tissue.

If however you just feel like a stretch after your workout because it feel good then I have no problem with that.

What Happens after the 4 Weeks?

Once you have finished the 4 weeks you may be wondering, what next? Well you have 2 options, either you repeat the 4 weeks again but this time perform more repetitions than last time or you simply change your workout to something new. I?ll be producing a lot more of these workouts so providing you are on my mailing list, which you can sign up at below, then I let you know.

T-Wolves' Rubio set for 1st practice in 9 months

(AP) ? For Ricky Rubio, the waiting has been the hardest part.

Now that Minnesota's dynamic young point guard is achingly close to playing in his first game in nearly nine months, Rubio says it's important to be patient with his recovery from torn ligaments in his left knee. He was cleared to return to full-contact practice this week and is expected to practice this weekend, but it's still too soon to tell when he will be able to play in a game for the Wolves.

"I don't want to think about dates, 'cause I don't want to rush it," Rubio said Friday after the team's shootaround before a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. "I want to feel like (I can) practice, and (worry) nothing at all about my knee. When that time comes, I will be ready."

Rubio tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee late in a game against the Lakers on March 9, derailing a thrilling rookie season for the Spanish import that helped make the Timberwolves relevant again after years of wallowing at the bottom of the Western Conference. He had surgery on March 21, and started the first significant rehabilitation program of his basketball career. The laborious process took the fun and creativity away from a game that's consumed him since he was a young boy.

"I think the most difficult part is being patient," Rubio said. "You can't do more than they say because you can get hurt. Being patient is hard. It's hard, but it is what it is. You just have to work as hard as you can and that's it."

Rubio has been participating in non-contact work with the Wolves for the past two weeks. He says the mobility in his knee is just about 100 percent, and he's anxious to see how it responds to his first practice, which could come as soon as Saturday.

"I think I feel great, but what they're saying is once you're playing basketball it's different," he said. "You can do whatever you want. You can run a lot. But then practice, it's just different. In the game, it's just different than everything else you do. They were saying I have to do running, do sprint, and after a couple things I will be exhausted, but I want to feel that."

The Timberwolves have been adamant throughout the process that they won't rush Rubio back. He's too important to the long-term health of the franchise to risk further injury for the sake of an extra win or two in December.

That said, the sooner he's back on the court zipping behind-the-back passes and alley-oop lobs before an adoring fan base, the better for a Wolves team that has struggled to find a consistent offensive flow without him. Luke Ridnour and JJ Barea haven't been able to get the ball moving from side to side as freely and easily as it did when Rubio was pulling the trigger.

They've also played at a much slower pace than coach Rick Adelman has historically preferred, turning games into grind-it-out affairs based heavily on the pick-and-roll in the halfcourt. With Rubio last season, the pace was much quicker, baskets were easier to come by and his defense on the perimeter made a huge difference as well.

Injuries to Kevin Love, Brandon Roy, Chase Budinger, Nikola Pekovic and Barea have also factored into the change in approach. But Rubio is the straw that stirs the drink in Minnesota.

So when will he play in a game?

The Timberwolves hosted the Bucks on Friday night, followed by three days off before a back-to-back in Philadelphia and Boston next week. The team has yet to announce a practice schedule, but they are expected to workout at least twice before hitting the road, and quite possibly on all three days as they try to get Rubio back up to speed.

The chances of Rubio playing in the back-to-back next week would seem slim given the team's stated approach of easing him back into things. That means a possibly playing a home game against Cleveland on Dec. 7, or perhaps a home game against Denver on Dec. 12 after four more days off.

"After the first or second practice, I will know more where I'm at," Rubio said. "Because right now I can practice, but I don't know how I will feel after my first practice."

Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said Rubio likely will start out with about 16-18 minutes of action in his first few games. Rubio knows that's probably for the best, but he doesn't have to like it.

"That's what the doctors said, that the first games we'll have to limit the minutes, which I say OK," Rubio said. "But once I'm out there, I don't think I can handle that. But it's going to be coach's decision to put me on the court."

YouTube Online Video Marketing - Sheer Social

You?ve shot the video and posted it to YouTube in hopes of ?informing people about your product, service, or event. Now that it?s published to the world, have you done everything needed to make sure that video gets views?? The second largest search engine in the world, there are millions of videos uploaded to YouTube already. How will yours stand out? Most don?t! So here?s nine YouTube online video marketing tips that will help your videos separate from the pack organically.

What does organically mean? It means without buying hits or views from those ?fake social media marketers? I mentioned previously. ?As a business or individual, you posted that video in hopes of reaching people that are genuinely interested in your content. Remember, you are not merely seeking hits, you?re aiming for product or service awareness, potential business leads and sales, or industry authority status, etc. ?Views or hits are just one way to initially measure whether your video has served its purpose.

1. Use proper keywords in your title, description, tags:? What words would people use to search for your content? These words are ?keywords.? ?Use product names, services, people?s names, etc. ?If your video is instructional use words like ??how-to? ?ways? ?tips? that also clue viewers into what they are about to see. It?s also best to use the main keyword first in your title.

Properly utilizing these keywords will increase the changes of your video being seen, not only on the YouTube platform, but also in Google search.

2. Add A Transcript: This might take some pre-production of your videos because it relies on the script or narration of your video. ?If there?s to be narration in your video, include keywords in the script. ?When you transcribe your videos, those keywords will be naturally included.? Below is an example of a YouTube transcription with listed time codes.

YouTube transcript/caption example

Unsure what keywords or phrases you should add to your script? Do a search on YouTube and see what your competition is using. Secondly, Use?Google?s Keyword Tool?to help you choose popular keywords and phrases related to your video.

Admittedly, transcribing your videos does take some extra work, but adding it to your YouTube videos will also increase its chances of being seen in search results. Need help to do the task? ?Enlist help of interns or online services like HireMyMom.com, TenBux.com, or Craigslist.com that will do the job inexpensively. ?The final product will need to be in a plain text file. ?To read more of what your transcript will need and how to upload it click HERE.

3. Embed In Your Blog/Website: ?Use the embed code provided by YouTube to embed your video into your website or blog. That may sound like common sense, but many leave their content on YouTube without thinking where else the video could strategically be used to increase visibility and views.

When embedding in your blog or website be sure to write key word rich text around it with a CALL TO ACTION such as ?watch?, ?see?, ?view,? ?or ?leave a comment.? ?Instruct site visitors exactly what you want them to do concerning your content.

4. Use Annotations: ?Got a series of videos? Use YouTube annotations to link to other YouTube videos or your channel. Annotations can be edited to pop up anytime while the video is playing and add an element of interactivity to your video. For example if there is a part 2 of your video or an alternative ending, use annotations in one video to draw viewers to the next one.

5. InVideo Programming:? This nifty and new tool introduced recently by YouTube allows you to feature a video ?picture-in-picture? style across all videos on your channel.? Once enabled you can feature a lesser viewed video within one that receives more views. Read more about it HERE.

6. Video Responses: See a video on YouTube that is related to yours and has lots of views and comments? That?s the kind you want to respond to. So choose one of your videos to do that. ?Once approved by that video uploader, your video will appear beneath theirs. This tactic can bring not only more awareness of your content, but also more views.

Videos that have 1 or less video responses are best to use because your response will be seen more prominently. Generally the first 2 responses are the most visible. ?Also, leave a text comment or even go the extra step and contact the uploader via the information provided.

7. Tweet, Post, and Pin It: ?This should go without saying, but I?m going to say it anyway! Share your videos on your social profiles, but don?t throw it up on your profiles all willy nilly. Be strategic! ?Find where the audience is for your content on Facebook, Twitter, bookmarking sites, and Pinterest then share it, not spam it!

Share your video within your online groups and forums where you have a presence. Share with the entire network or a few targeted individuals.

8. Create Playlists: Grouping your videos into a playlist helps improve your videos search engine optimization aka visibility in search. Again, when titling your playlist remember step 1 in using the appropriate keywords in describing your playlist.

9. Post Regularly: ?The more quality content you create the better according to YouTube?s algorithm. Consequently, you increase the chances your content will be seen and engaged with. Timely and fresh content is key to building an audience so think long term in developing your content, not short one hit wonders.

BONUS TIP Be Sheer, Be Social: Remember YouTube is not only a video hosting site, the second largest search engine on the internet, it?s also a social platform. Comment, respond to comments, like, share, and have an active presence there. Basically, ?do unto others? as the saying goes and it will be returned. ?Encouraging engagement, such as likes and comments. These actions increases your search rank, and thus your video?s visibility on the platform.

Microsoft promises to fix random reboots on Windows Phone 8 by next month

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

OpenELEC 3.0 Linux distro launches in beta, rolls in XBMC 12

OpenELEC 30 Linux distro launches in beta, rolls in XBMC 12

We hope you weren't getting settled in with OpenELEC 2.0. Hot on the heels of the finished 2.0 release, the developement team has pushed out a first beta of OpenELEC 3.0 that folds XBMC 12.0 Frodo into the Linux distribution for home theater PCs. Accordingly, most of the additions are those that come with XBMC's code base: OpenELEC now supports ARM through the Raspberry Pi, betters its DVR support and slips in a modern audio engine. The distro-specific changes bring an update to the Linux 3.6 kernel, many more hardware drivers and an option to boot to RAM instead of a pokey hard drive. Running one beta based on another carries more than its share of risk, so be careful; if the positives for your living room continue to outweigh the pitfalls, 3.0 awaits at the source link.

Mathematics used to identify contamination in water distribution networks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? None of us want to experience events like the Camelford water pollution incident in Cornwall, England, in the late eighties, or more recently, the Crestwood, Illinois, water contamination episode in 2009 where accidental pollution of drinking water led to heart-wrenching consequences to consumers, including brain damage, high cancer risk, and even death. In the case of such catastrophes, it is important to have a method to identify and curtail contaminations immediately to minimize impact on the public. A paper published earlier this month in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics considers the identification of contaminants in a water distribution network as an optimal control problem within a networked system.

"Water supply networks are an essential part of our infrastructure. Sometimes the water in such a network can be contaminated, often by human error, causing the use of polluted water for drinking water production. In the case of such a situation, it is important to have a method to identify the location of the pollution source," says the paper's author, Martin Gugat, explaining the significance of his work. The paper considers a water distribution network with a finite number of nodes where contamination can occur in the pipes.

"The contamination spreads dynamically through the network with time. So, in order to model the system, a model of the evolution in time is necessary," explains Gugat. "In our approach, we use a partial differential equation (PDE) to model how pollution spreads in the network."

By using a PDE model for transport of contaminants, the problem of identifying the source becomes an optimal control problem. The solution is calculated using equidistant time grids, which allows one to determine the values of contamination at all potential sources on the time grid. Available data on pollution and network flow is incorporated into the model.

Employing certain assumptions for travel times through the pipes, the author uses a least-squares method to solve the problem. The least squares method provides approximate solutions to optimization problems that are relatively e?cient to compute using the tools of numerical linear algebra.

This provides a fast method to identify possible contamination sources, explains Gugat. "For a really accurate model, however, a full system of three-dimensional PDEs is necessary. But with three-dimensional PDEs, simulation is only possible for small networks," he says. "This illustrates that to solve real life problems on real networks, there is a trade-off between the accuracy of the model and its utility."

While the method is tested numerically in the paper, additional work would involve testing the system with an existing water network to demonstrate its workability in practice.

Another future direction is toward elimination of the contaminant. "The second step after the identification of the contamination source is a strategy to flush the polluted water out of the network as fast as possible with acceptable operational cost. The development of an optimal strategy for such a rehabilitation of the water supply is an interesting question for future research," says Gugat.

"For a more detailed model of the process, more complex nonlinear PDEs could be used," he continues. "The cost of the numerical treatment of complex PDEs for large networks is prohibitive. Applied mathematics has to offer models that can be used according to the problem requirements to solve problems with network graphs of a realistic size."

Revolutionary membrane technology could reduce U.S. energy consumption by as much as 3 percent

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (11/28/2012) The University of Minnesota has been awarded a $1.8 million grant over three years from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects AgencyEnergy (ARPA-E) to develop revolutionary membrane technology that will enable energy-efficient separations in the chemical, petrochemical, water, fossil fuel, and renewable energy industries. When fully implemented, the technology could reduce U.S. energy consumption by as much as 3 percent.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and ARPA-E Deputy Directors Eric Toone and Cheryl Martin publicly announced the ARPA-E awards today. The University of Minnesota's award is specifically aimed at improving efficiencies of industrial processes. The grant money is intended to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application.

"We have the science, but this grant will allow us to scale up the research and move it closer to market," said lead researcher Michael Tsapatsis, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science in the University's College of Science and Engineering. The other members of the research team are chemical engineering and materials science professors Chris Macosko and Prodromos Daoutidis.

A significant fraction of total energy consumption (approximately 30 percent for the U.S.) is attributed to manufacturing and a major component of this amount is due to energy used in separation and purification processesas high as 6 percent of the total U.S. energy consumption.

Tsapatsis and his team published research last year about their discovery of a means for developing free-standing, ultra-thin zeolite nanosheets that as thin films can speed up the filtration process and require less energy. Science magazine named the research as one of the biggest breakthroughs of 2011.

While researchers can envision numerous applications, they will focus on separations encountered in biofuel and plastics production. For both applications there is a large existing market, the requirements of which cannot be met by available membrane technologies.

Researchers estimate that for biofuels alone, annual membrane sales of $500 million per year can be anticipated if the technology is fully implemented. Similar levels of sales are expected for the plastics industry bringing total sales to $1 billion per year. If these early applications get commercial traction, other opportunities for the use of nanosheet membranes will emerge as well.

"Our next step is to bring these revolutionary membrane materials to commercial reality by developing a low-cost manufacturing approach that can be scaled-up efficiently," Tsapatsis said.

US Forest Service Clears Timberline Mountain Bike Trails and Skills Park
SportsOneSource Media???? Posted: 11/27/2012

After a two-year public comment period, the U.S. Forest Service has cleared the way for construction of a lift assisted mountain bike park at the Timberline Lodge and Ski Area Complex.

The ruling came in a public notice approving an amendment to the special use permit held by RLK & Co., which submitted a proposal for the Timberline Mountain Bike Trails and Skills Park to the Forest Service in 2010. RLK?s proposal calls for using the resorts lifts to carry riders to the top of a 17-mile mountain bike trail system crossing ski trails and forested areas with the Timberland Ski Area.

The project generated more than 1,200 comments from the public, including letters and e-mails from environmentalists opposed to it and mountain biking enthusiasts who supported it.? The Forest Service said it addressed many opponents concerns in its Environmental Assessment, which requires project design elements that would prevent erosion and damage to vegetation, as well as watershed restoration projects to correct pre-existing sedimentation issues that would be implemented concurrently with the bike park and trails.

RLK has already contracted Gravity Logic to design and develop the mountain bike trail plans. Gravity Logic created the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, which is widely regarded as the gold-standard by which other mountain bike areas are measured.?

Forest Supervisor Christopher Worth ruled that the project is consistent with the Mt. Hood Forest Plan and the Timberline Master Development Plan and will help the Mt. Hood National Forest continue to provide an array of recreation opportunities to various age groups, skill levels, and interests, the Forest Service said in a press release announcing its decision.

?Timberline Lodge and Ski Area were envisioned by its founders as a place where Oregonians would enjoy the benefits of four season active recreation, in the world-class alpine setting represented by Mt. Hood,?? Worth said in a statement released by the Forest Service. ?FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) amazingly foresaw this potential opportunity when he dedicated the lodge 75 years ago.?

RLK, which has operated Timberline ski are for more than 50 years, plans to build out Phase 1 of the bike park early next summer and open it in the last summer. Full operation is slated for Summer 2014.

A handful of?ski area operators have announced plans for similar projects since 2011, when Congress passed the Ski Area Recreation Opportunity Enhancement Act, which expanded permitting rules for ski areas on U.S. Forest Service land to allow summertime recreation in a bid to generate year-round tourism.

Supreme Court allows new challenge to health law

DEAR ABBY: I'm a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, my first and only marriage ended after 20 years. Over the past two years, I have been in a wonderful relationship with a very bright woman, "Toni," who told me she had been married twice before.A year ago, her job required that she move out of state, but we have successfully maintained the long-distance relationship with frequent visits and daily phone calls.A few days ago, I learned by chance that she was briefly married a third time while she was in her early 20s. ...

Buying Real Estate To Build Your Bottom Line | Traffic Secrets

If you are a newcomer to purchasing real estate, you are probably searching for tips that can help you along with your purchase. Listed below are some tips to get you started with your property purchasing endeavors.

When seeking a new home, think long-term. If you are planning on having kids, make sure that you purchase a home that has a good school nearby.

When considering relocation, look no further than the Internet to find all the pertinent information about the town. You can find a lot of information, even for the smallest cities. Do thorough research into any area in which you plan to purchase real estate. It is no fun to find out later that you have invested in dead-end real estate.

Learn as much as you can before you jump into the property market. Too many people dive head first into real estate ventures and lose a lot of capital due to mistakes that could have been prevented. Take the time to learn more about the neighborhood, the condition of the property, and the average real estate prices.

If you are going to be starting a new business, before you purchase your building, make sure that the location is in a viable and relatively safe neighborhood. Deciding to launch a business enterprise in an undesirable area is likely to limit your pool of potential customers. Talk to a professional to find the best locations.

Always make sure to obtain a warranty for your home. If you are purchasing new from a builder, or pre-loved from an existing owner, request a warranty. Reputable builders should not hesitate to guarantee their product for a period of time after the sale. The previous owner should buy a warranty for the home for you, for at least one year, to help with any repairs that might need to be made.

Even if the bank does not require a home inspection for a loan to go through, you will still want to have any property inspected. Professional home inspectors will help you identify problem areas and avoid costly bills in the future. There are many things that can be wrong with a home that an untrained eye cannot see, so it is best to have a home inspector give the property a good look before the purchase.

When trying to make a go at it in real estate, it important to be armed with the right information. The legal issues can be both time consuming and confusing. Use these tips to get you started. These are the necessary steps that must be taken if you wish to become comfortable with the market, and actually begin to pull in a sustainable profit.

why do girls always want more from me? - Love, Sex ...

Emergency contact - If she has no one closer fair enough

Key - IMO only needed if your living together part or full time

Joint bank account - IMO only if you are settled down living together and pretty much common law husband/wife already

The real biggy is when the 'do you want kids' question comes up, this is the all or nothing, make or break moment

My answer which I though reasonable at the time was 'yes but only after living happily together for at least a year, dont ever want to be a weekend dad or CSA slave', apparently this was the wrong answer for her, she wanted kids sooner and without commitment, I still stand by my reasoning, but also wonder 'what if' since this reasoning cost me the only women I ever even considered the kids question with.

Auburn fires Gene Chizik after 3-9 season

(AP) ? Gene Chizik led Auburn to perhaps the greatest season in the program's history, and two years later to maybe its worst.

The rapid fall from a national championship to 3-9 and the Southeastern Conference doormat led to Chizik's firing Sunday, the day after a humbling 49-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama that showed just how far the program has slipped.

The Tigers endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national championship of any team since the Associated Press poll started in 1936 and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950. The decision came 17 months after Auburn gave Chizik a contract worth some $3.5 million annually through 2015 with a hefty buyout.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said he informed Chizik Saturday night that he would recommend to President Jay Gogue the next morning that Chizik not be retained.

He said he had concerns with lopsided losses in 2011 but grew "very concerned in our fundamental approach to the game" after the Arkansas game.

"I had hoped our team would show some improvement this season," Jacobs said. "Unfortunately it didn't. The competition in our league is fierce. I decided we could not risk falling further behind by waiting for another year and hoping for improvement."

The players were informed in a team meeting Sunday.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," Chizik said in a statement released by Auburn. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made."

The Tigers went from 14-0 with a perfect SEC record with Cam Newton leading the offense in 2010 to 3-9 and 0-8, losing their final three league games by a combined 150-21. Auburn was blown out by Texas A&M (63-21) and Georgia (38-0) but the finale was even more painful for Tigers fans.

The Crimson Tide cruised to a six-touchdown halftime lead and the second-most lopsided Iron Bowl victory in history, behind only the Tide's 55-0 win in 1948.

"While we experienced a tremendous low in 2012, I will always be proud of the incredible highs that we achieved, including three bowl victories, an SEC championship and a national championship," Chizik said.

He was 33-19 in four seasons and 15-17 in SEC games.

Auburn said the total buyout for Chizik and his assistant coaches is $11.09 million. Chizik's buyout is expected to total $7.5 million and will be paid in monthly installments for the next four years.

Six assistants are under contract through June 30, 2013 while defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor have deals extending another year beyond that.

The buyouts could be reduced if the coaches find other jobs.

Auburn joins Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky as SEC teams with job openings showing the huge divide in a league with six teams ranked in the Top 11.

Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said players gave Chizik a warm ovation after the team meeting.

"I think we did what he deserved and we gave him a standing ovation and clapped for him," he said. "There's so much love for coach Chizik on this team. Would we have loved to see him get another year, another opportunity? Yes, but at the same time we understand where Jay Jacobs is coming from. Three wins isn't going to cut it in our league."

Defensive tackle Jeff Whitaker said, "It's kind of crazy right now. I had a special bond with Coach Chizik."

Chizik inserted tailback Tre Mason on the final play against Alabama to get him to 1,000 yards. The next day, Mason saw his coach get fired.

"It was a rough day for everybody," Mason said. "It's tough. There are going to be a lot of tears shed because there are a lot of relationships that may be put on hold or come to an end today. I have nothing negative to say about coach Chizik. He's done a lot for me and this program. I wish him the best of luck in his future."

Chizik had sandwiched two 8-5 seasons around the national title, but never approached the success of 2010, when Newton won the Heisman Trophy. The Tigers were 7-17 in SEC games outside of 2010 during his tenure.

His hiring was criticized by some fans after Chizik went 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State and lost the last 10 games of his first head coaching job.

Jacobs was heckled at the airport after making the hire.

Chizik had been defensive coordinator on unbeaten teams at Auburn and Texas.

A search committee comprised of former Heisman Trophy winners Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson and former Tigers fullback Mac Crawford will assist Jacobs, the school said.

Jacobs said he wants a proven winner ? not necessarily an experienced head coach ? who follows the rules and stresses academics.

A transition year in 2012 might have been expected.

Chizik had to replace the offensive and defensive coordinators after last season. Chizik made an ill-fated switch from Gus Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense to a pro-style system with the hiring of former Temple offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.

The Tigers struggled in the transition, partly because of shaky quarterback play and ended the season with freshman Jonathan Wallace under center.

Auburn ranked at or near the bottom of the SEC in every major statistical category offensively and defensively.

Chizik's tenure was marred by off-the-field problems, too, to the extent that he had employees of a private firm run curfew checks on players this season.

Four members of the 2010 national championship team were arrested on robbery charges in March 2011. Antonio Goodwin was convicted in April and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Dakota Mosley, Michael McNeil and Shaun Kitchens are awaiting trial.

Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Mike Dyer transferred to Arkansas State with Malzahn after being indefinitely suspended before the bowl game.

Freshman quarterback Zeke Pike was arrested in June for public intoxication and later dismissed from the team. Starting center Reese Dismukes was suspended for the opener against Clemson following a public intoxication arrest.

Auburn is also the subject of an NCAA investigation that includes the recruitment of Memphis running back Jovon Robinson, who was ruled ineligible after a guidance counselor admitted to creating a fake transcript.

Chizik's contract includes a clause that it wouldn't owe the buyout money if he is fired for cause, including findings of major rules violations or significant or repetitive violations" involving him or his program.

Chizik and Auburn have weathered past NCAA scrutiny. The governing body closed investigations into the recruitment of Newton and allegations from four former players that they were paid thousands of dollars during their college careers.

"I've got the utmost confidence in our NCAA compliance," Jacobs said. "Basically it boils down to winning and losing. Winning three games is unacceptable."

?I Didn?t Come Back to Jerusalem To Be in a War: What it?s like to be in Israel as the conflict escalates,? by Dahlia Lithwick. Lithwick writes about the intense sadness of life during wartime and wonders when both sides will finally reject war and talk about peace. From Tel Aviv, Jessica Apple discusses the challenges of raising children in a war zone, and the constant terror of air raids and bomb shelters. Janine Zacharia, meanwhile, posits that Israel?s Gaza campaign is doomed, destined only to bring further isolation to the region, and Sarah Tory explains the science behind the country?s high-tech iron dome missile shield.

?Baby Blue Streak: Can I stop swearing before my daughter is born?? by Jessica Grose. Cursing around kids could get them into the habit for a lifetime. What about cursing around fetuses? Grose, many months pregnant, decided to experiment with a curse-free lifestyle for a month. She mostly succeeded?but was the trade-off worth it?

?Bring Back Petraeus: He?s already been humiliated and rehabilitated. Obama should rehire him as CIA director,? by Emily Yoffe. Yes, Gen. David Petraeus had a tawdry affair that exposed his weaknesses to the world. But did he do anything illegal? Yoffe makes a case for Petraeus? rehiring, believing it would strike a blow against America?s sexual puritanism while reconfirming our civil liberties.?

?The Real Lesson of the Petraeus Scandal: We delude ourselves about the way we use technology,? by Christine Rosen. How could a top-ranking general in the U.S. military leave such a massive paper trail of his malfeasance? It helps that no actual paper was involved. Rosen explains how our online communications, freed from the constraints of in-person interaction, may be foolish and strange.

?Who Said It: Marco Rubio or Barack Obama? Willful ignorance of science is a bipartisan value,? by Daniel Engber. In a recent GQ interview, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio refused to say how old he believed Earth to be. Liberals were furious, but his comments actually echoed President Obama?s own. Engber examines the startling equivalence of both parties? denial of science, positing that politicians play by different rules than scientists and pastors.

??Explain Away the Gay: Opponents of same-sex marriage went 0-for-4 in the election. But they have lots of excuses,? by William Saletan. The National Organization for Marriage?the most prominent and active anti-gay-marriage organization?lost all four statewide ballot initiatives. NOM actually ?knew long ago? that it ?faced a difficult political landscape? this year, according to their post-election spin. Saletan explores NOM?s various excuses for their massive loss at the polls, noting that somehow none of them involve the basic fact that more Americans accept marriage equality than ever before.

?Do Coal Plants Really Kill People? Why Romney was right,? by Amanda Schaffer. Both presidential candidates declared themselves friends of coal during this year?s election?a challenge for Romney, who once said that coal production could be toxic. He repeatedly disavowed the comment, but Schaffer argues that he was, in fact, completely accurate: Coal plants release potentially deadly emissions into the air that can damage children?s brains and lungs. That won?t keep future presidential candidates from praising ?clean coal,? though.

?Tax Hike Nation: Republicans always talk tough about not raising taxes. Now they know they have to cut a deal,? by David Weigel. This election cycle, Republicans ran on a strict platform of no new taxes, even for the wealthy. They lost. Weigel discusses Obama?s newfound leverage in allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, and ponders whether GOP legislators will be wise enough to buck Grover Norquist?s anti-tax pledge.

?Don?t Worry About the Voting Rights Act: If the Supreme Court strikes down part of it, black and Hispanic voters will be just fine,? by Eric Posner and Nicholas Stephanopoulos. As Emily Bazelon recently noted, five members of the Supreme Court appear poised to strike down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act designed to prevent voter suppression of minorities in many Southern states. Eric Posner agrees they might, but argues that this won?t spell doom for minority voters in the South: Another, more obviously Constitutional provision of the Act could be equally effective in preventing disenfranchisement of minorities.

Malaysia And Cambodia: 115. Baba Nyonya Museum

The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum here is a must see. There are two ladies who do guided tours (the slimmer lady was really fun) and tours run for about 30-40 minutes. The museum is right in the middle of Chinatown and runs parallel to Jonker Street

About the Baba Nyonya Museum
The house was built in 1896, and was the family home of the Baba Chan family known as Rumah Abu. Chan Kim Lay, aged 83, is the fourth generation of his family.
It is in a well-preserved traditional Peranakan town house, built in 1896 by millionaire rubber planter Chan Cheng Siew. Today it is owned by William Chan and his family, who conduct tours of their ancestral home. The interior is that of a typical 19th-century residence and all the rooms are still as they would have been 100 years ago. The house contains family heirlooms and antiques, including Nyonyaware porcelain and blackwood furniture with marble or mother-of-pearl inlay, and silverware. There is also a collection of traditional wedding costumes, photographs and kitchen utensils. The kitchen sink has the name of William Chan's great grandfather carved on it. The information-packed tours are run regularly throughout the day.

Sunday 21st March
Today's "sightseeing" was on the Chinatown side of the Malacca River. I asked Liz (part owner of Heeren House) the best route to take to avoid backtracking and the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum was first on my "list" seeing as it was in Heeren Street, only just up the road from where I was staying. The metal security door was locked and you had to press the bell. A lady came, asked did I want to do a tour, the next one was starting in about 15 minutes and let me in. Price was a few ringitts. She said no photos were allowed inside the museum (you can take as many pics as you like of the outside though) This (she said) was because people came, took photos and made copies of the furnishings. At the end of the tour you can buy souvenirs. (I bought postcards and took photos of the postcards.)

The Chinese signboard above the main door way is called a Jee Ho.
We learnt the fascinating history of the Baba Nyonyas who are descendants of the Chinese who came to Malaysia and married Malays. The offspring were the Baba (male) Nyonya (female). They are also known as ?Straits-born Chinese? or ?Peranakans?. The Straits Chinese were of noble descent and adopted much of the Malay culture as their own. Elderly Chinese ladies were very conservative and would peek through the holes in the fancy carved timber to see who was in the room where the master of the house conducted his business affairs. As we walked through the middle door, we learnt that the present owner who is the grandson (or the great grandson?) of the original owner had turned his family home into a museum some years ago and was about 70 or 80 years old, and though he might be "old" his brain is as sharp as a tack. The Chinese man who originally bought the house, bought one house first, then the second then the third and turned them into one house. Originally the entrance was the door of the house to the right but that has now been locked and the middle house has the entrance. Above: The First Lady of the House
After walking in, we moved to the room on the right which is where business was conducted. Chinese ladies never took part in this and the wives of the business men sat in another room and played card games. The table had drink holders which could be pulled out from the table to hold cups/glasses. They must have been very bored playing cards and eating sweetmeats. A far different lifestyle than today.

Moving back into the centre and walking towards the back is a very large area with a sunken tiled area. There is no roof - houses were very narrow, had windows at the front only, so natural light was needed and was therefore necessary to have this area for when it rained, otherwise the house would have been flooded. Another interesting fact - the only door is at the front - there are no back doors. So bad guys had no way of entering the house. That is also the reason windows are at the front of the house only.

Moving toward the front of the house, just in front of the atrium is a beautiful staircase with carpet on the upper level. We were told to remove our shoes. The first part is circular and at the top on the right is a long hallway with sideboards displaying antiques. One of these held very, very old bottles of brandy and cognac. We were instructed not to sample them. Asking the tour guide if the taste would be better now due to age, she laughed and said she wasn't sure but nobody was game enough to try!

CCTV
We may think we invented CCTV, but those Chinese invented it first! They were very smart - after climbing up the stairs, we were led to the area in the middle of the house near the front and instructed to look down. There was a small square about 6" (15 cms), our guide pulled something and lifted it off and there we had a view of the entrance door below. She explained this was how the master of the house determined who he would allow to come into his home - if he didn't like the look of you, a bowl of water would be tipped out over you, so always hold an umbrella over your head!

Bridal Chamber

Above: Bridal Chamber
The bridal chamber which you see above is a most magnificant bed with rich tapestries and furnishings. This is where the master of the house and his bride slept. There is a ceremony held first before they jump into bed. As marriages were arranged, the bride had only seen her bridegroom's face through the peephole before the wedding, the groom hadn't seen the bride at all and they needed to get to know each other first. Such a sensible idea really.

There was a large mirror a few feet from the bed, the bride sat on a chair near the bed and the groom would look in the mnirror to see the face of his bride. This way he was prepared should he be unlucky enough to have married an ugly lady! (As I mentioned, such a sensible idea don't you think?) After this, they would then sit at a table and partake of drinks and foods while they became comfortable with each other. The bed is quite small by today's standards as people were quite a bit shorter and smaller back in those days.

Coming out from the bridal chamber we moved to the left along a passageway to the children's rooms. This passage had windows which faced the front and we could see the courtyard below. There was a staircase off to the right and for safety and security there was a folding door which opened at the top staircase area and unfolded to seal off access. Very good if the husband had had a night on the town and wanted to sneak in. Also very useful if the lady of the house was annoyed with him - all she had to door was seal this off and the poor old husband had to spend the night outdoors!?

Coming back down the stairs, putting our shoes back on we were led to the kitchens. Those poor servants had no modern day conveniences of today and must have been a very healthy bunch indeed. The master and his family ate at one table - there was another table (not nearly as glorious) where the servants ate. Beautiful china was arrayed and the more intricate the design, the wealthier the family. Blue and white china is used for funerals only. You can see in the above collage, top left hand photo,? the pink floral china which was in use.

The owner of the house had had installed modern toilets near here which we could use, and souvenirs were in a smallish alcove. It was a most instructive tour and should I find myself in Malacca again, I'd definitely do the tour again.
