Mailbox 1.3 for iOS brings iPad support

Mailbox launches for iPad

There have been calls for an iPad-native Mailbox app virtually from the get-go -- some of us want to get to inbox zero on a bigger screen, after all. The team has clearly been listening, as the free Mailbox 1.3 update now supports Apple's larger gadgets. While there isn't much mystery in the new version for anyone who has used both Mailbox and other iPad email clients before, power users should appreciate seeing full messages while they swipe away at their inbox. We're still waiting on Mailbox support for other platforms -- and services beyond Gmail, for that matter -- but iPad owners can get some satisfaction at the source link.

11-Foot Lego X-Wing Arrives in Times Square

For the last week, an airplane hangar on the south shore of New York's Long Island was home to the world's largest Lego model. There, a team of Lego engineers readied an 11-foot-tall model of the X-wing starfighter from Star Wars for its debut today in New York's Times Square. After a three-day stint in the Big Apple, the model will move to Legoland California where it will reside for the remainder of the year.

Lego builders in the Czech Republic spent four months building the model, which is made of more than 5.3 million stock Lego bricks. Inside its Lego exterior is a complex steel framework, also constructed in the Czech Republic.

Lego engineers designed the spacecraft using the company's Brick Builder CAD program, which they used to map out the layers upon layers of pieces that would make up the 45,000-pound model.

Although the program gives a rough guide of where each brick should go, its up to the builders to figure out the order in which to place them.

To get the model to the U.S., the builders broke it into 34 pieces transported on two boats. Once stateside, they reassembled the finished starfighter in Islip, Long Island, where I climbed into its cockpit last week. Then the X-wing was deconstructed again?this time, into only three parts?and hauled last night on six flatbed trucks into New York, where cranes lifted it into position. The stunt is part of the run-up to The Yoda Chronicles, an animated three-part TV special that starts May 29.

Team owners voted Tuesday for the 49ers' new stadium as host of the 2016 game. That facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is due to open for the 2014 season.

San Francisco beat out South Florida, which was stymied in its bid to stage an 11th Super?Bowl when the Florida Legislature did not support financing to renovate Sun Life Stadium.

"After losing a Super?Bowl (to Baltimore), it feels really good to win a Super?Bowl," 49ers CEO Jed York cracked.

Houston, which also beat out Miami, was awarded the 2017 title game. It has hosted once before, in 2004.

The only previous Super?Bowl played in northern California was at Stanford Stadium in 1985.

When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the 2016 decision, members of the San Francisco bid committee let out a roar of approval, then toasted each other with champagne.

"We are so excited to be able to be able to put on the 'Golden Super?Bowl' in the Golden State," York said.

Asked what he believed swayed the owners to vote for San Francisco, York added: "It's the will power of an entire area that gave an overwhelming push for us."

It was the first time in a decade that a Super?Bowl was awarded on the first ballot.

"The Bay Area has been waiting for a (title) game since 1985. We have a stadium now ... we are just thrilled and couldn't be happier about this," said Daniel Lurie, a leader of the San Francisco bid.

"We are going to get to highlight the best the Bay Area has to offer."

The Dolphins were denied public money for a stadium upgrade in South Florida following widespread complaints about the public investment sunk into the Marlins' new baseball home.

Multibillionaire Dolphins owner Stephen Ross contends $350 million in stadium improvements are badly needed, but he doesn't want to pay for them by himself. Nor does he want a scaled-down renovation of the 26-year-old facility.

Miami has hosted 10 Super?Bowls, tied with New Orleans for the most. But neither will get the 50th.

York suggested that San Francisco's winning bid offered a lesson in politics.

"If this Super?Bowl can show the state of California and other communities the opportunity with a new stadium to bring in fresh business, it could be a catalyst that stadiums can be built for Oakland and San Diego, which are in need of new ones," he said. "This may be the impetus to get one of those done."

For years, it was thought the NFL would seek to stage the 50th Super?Bowl in Los Angeles, where the first one was played (but did not sell out) on Jan. 15, 1967. But with no franchise in LA and no suitable stadium projects approved, that hope disappeared.

Next Feb. 2, the game goes outdoors in a cold-weather site for the first time, at MetLife Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands. If that gamble pays off for the NFL, look for other cities in similar climates ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver ? to bid for future Super?Bowls.

The 2015 game will be played in the Phoenix area.

Earlier Tuesday, owners approved a $200 million loan for stadium construction in Atlanta. The multipurpose stadium could cost as much as $1 billion, with team owner Arthur Blank committed to funding most of it. Blank, speaking at the NFL's spring meetings, called the decision by the team owners an "important milestone" in moving the project forward.

How gold nanoparticles can help fight ovarian cancer

May 21, 2013 ? Positively charged gold nanoparticles are usually toxic to cells, but cancer cells somehow manage to avoid nanoparticle toxicity. Mayo Clinic researchers found out why and determined how to make the nanoparticles effective against ovarian cancer cells.

The discovery is detailed in the current online issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

"This study identifies a novel mechanism that protects ovarian cancer cells by preventing the cell death or apoptosis which should occur when they encounter positively charged nanoparticles," say the senior authors of this study, Priyabrata Mukherjee, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic molecular biologist, and Y. S. Prakash, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist and physiologist.

Why Cancer Cells Survived

Gold nanoparticles can have many medical uses, from imaging and aiding diagnoses to delivering therapies. In this case, using a special preparation to put positive ionic charges on the surface, the nanoparticle is intended to act as a targeted destructor of tumor cells while leaving healthy cells alone. The nanoparticles are supposed to kill cells by causing cellular calcium ion levels to increase. But researchers discovered that a regulatory protein in the mitochondria essentially buffers the rising calcium by transporting it into the mitochondria, thus subverting cell death. Cancer cells have an abundance of this transporter and may thus be protected from nanoparticle toxicity. The research team discovered that if they inhibit calcium uptake into the mitochondria, sufficient cellular stress builds up, making the gold nanoparticles more effective in destroying cancer cells.

The researchers say that understanding how mitochondrial transport mechanisms work will help in the design of targeted therapies against cancer. They called for nanoparticle developers to integrate this new mechanistic knowledge into their processes for designing nanoparticle properties to be used in therapy.

The study was a team effort between researchers at Mayo Clinic including Mayo authors Rochelle Arvizo, Ph.D., Sounik Saha, Ph.D., Michael Thompson, and Resham Bhattacharya, Ph.D.; and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst including Daniel Moyano and Vincent Rotello, Ph.D.

Optics: Statistics light the way

May 22, 2013 ? A revelation of how photoreceptive cells in the eye distinguish between different light sources could pave the way for a novel class of optical devices.

Millions of years of evolution have molded our eyes into highly sensitive optical detectors, surpassing even many human-made devices. Now, Leonid Krivitsky and his co-workers at the A*STAR Data Storage Institute and the A*STAR Institute of Medical Biology, Singapore, have shown that the photoreceptor cells found in the retina are even sensitive to the statistical properties of light. This ability could be harnessed in 'bioquantum' interfaces, a novel class of optical devices that use biological systems to detect the quantum nature of light.

Light comprises discrete bundles of energy known as photons. A 40-Watt light bulb, for example, creates more than 1019 (a one followed by 19 zeros) visible photons every second. Nevertheless, attenuated sources that generate light pulses containing just a few photons are also useful. In such ultralow-intensity light pulses, the statistical distribution of photons emitted in a single pulse depends on the light source.

Warm light sources such as light-bulb filaments generate photons in bunches. Lasers, in contrast, create photons randomly -- each is emitted independently of the next. Krivitsky and his co-workers experimentally demonstrated that rod photoreceptor cells in the eye can distinguish between pulses of light from either a laser or a thermal light based only on these differing distributions. "Showing that such cells can assess photon statistics provides hope for accessing the quantum properties of light using biodetectors," says Krivitsky.

Krivitsky and his team trapped a photoreceptor cell from a frog on the end of a suction pipette. Then they fired green-light laser pulses at the cell through an optical fiber. The same device could also imitate a thermal light source when they placed a rotating disk of ground glass and an aperture into the beam path.

They observed that rhodopsin molecules in the cell absorbed the incoming photons, which generated an ion current. The researchers amplified and measured this current as the average number of photons in each light pulse increased. They noticed a much sharper increase in detected current for the laser light than the pseudothermal pulses. This is because, while the average photon number is the same, an individual pseudothermal pulse was more likely to have a low number of photons. The photon distribution of the laser pulses, on the other hand, was much narrower.

The two types of photon emitters investigated in these experiments are examples of 'classical' light sources. "The next step is to investigate quantum light, such as pulses with a fixed number of photons," notes Krivitsky.

The A*STAR-affiliated researchers contributing to this research are from the Data Storage Institute and the Institute of Medical Biology

Moon hit by boulder-size meteoroid, causing 'explosion' visible from earth (+video)

If you had been looking up at the moon at the right moment on March 17, you could have seen a one-second burst of heat caused by the impact of a large meteoroid.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / May 18, 2013

Hundreds of meteoroid impacts on the moon, detected by NASA's lunar monitoring program, are pictured in this undated NASA handout photo. The brightest, detected on March 17, 2013, in Mare Imbrium, is marked by the red square.

If you had been looking up at the moon at the right moment on March 17, you could have seen an unusual flash of light ? a one-second burst of heat caused by the impact of a large meteoroid.

No telescope required.

?For about one second, the impact site was glowing like a 4th magnitude star,? NASA said in reporting the news Friday.

This meteoroid was the size of a small boulder, and was travelling very fast. NASA estimates the size at 0.3 to 0.4 meters wide, and the speed at 56,000 m.p.h.?

The resulting explosion? delivered a force equal to 5 tons of TNT.

NASA puts a footnote on the word ?explosion.? The bright light wasn?t combustion, since the moon has no oxygen atmosphere. Rather, it was the glow of molten rock and hot vapors after an impact of large kinetic force.

That said, this was the biggest such ?explosion? in eight years of close monitoring of the moon?s surface.

And it?s not that meteoroids on the lunar surface are rare.

The moon lacks a protective atmosphere like Earth?s, in which meteoroids typically burn up. Lunar meteor showers have turned out to be more common than expected, with hundreds of detectable impacts per year.

On March 17, the pyrotechnics on the moon coincided with an active night for meteors in Earth?s atmosphere as well.

NASA?s Space Exploration Policy eventually calls for extended astronaut stays on the moon, so tracking meteor activity has long-term relevance.

?Identifying the sources of lunar meteors and measuring their impact rates gives future lunar explorers an idea of what to expect,? the space agency said in announcing the bright explosion Friday. ?Is it safe to go on a moonwalk, or not?? The middle of March might be a good time to stay inside.??

Mustapha Salma on hunger strike in protest against the Polisario ...

By Youssef El Kaidi

Morocco World News

Fez, May 20, 2013

The Sahraoui activist Mustapha Weld Sidi Mouloud who is exiled from Tindouf Camps in Algeria for two years and a half so far in Mauritania declared that he will enter in an open hunger strike in front of the delegation of the High Commission for Refugee Aid in Nouakchott starting from May 20th, until the settlement of his status.

Mustapha Salma said in a statement issued on Sunday, May 19 that he made this decision after exhausting all the means of legal communication with the parties concerned with the settlement of his status at the level of the offices of the High Commission of Refugee Aid and the authorities of Mauritania. He noted that he hasn?t yet got any positive response concerning his request to get a passport and his right and the right of his family to reunite and live together in normal circumstances.

The decision of hunger strike comes, according to the statement, ?in waiting for the High Commission of Refugee Aid to fulfill its commitment to finding a solution which may bring my family together after two years and a half of separation and sufferance following my prevention from returning to my children in the Sahraoui refugee camps on the Algerian territory and my exile to Mauritania.?

Mustapha Salma held all the parties concerned with his plight responsible for forcing him to take such a decision and for what might result out of it ?due to their procrastination in the search of a plausible solution and the ignorance they pay to the inhumane conditions that [he]and [his] children undergo.? He appealed to people of conscience in the world to support his right to mobility and the right of his family to reunite with him.

Following his ?explicit support? of the Moroccan proposal meant to resolve the conflict in the Sahara on the basis of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty; Mr. Mustapha Salma Weld Sidi Mouloud was kidnapped on September 21st, 2010 by the militias of Polisario upon arrival at the border checkpoint leading to the Tindouf camps and was held in a secret location.

The Sahraoui militant, who served as the General Inspector of the police of Polisario, was released at the end of 2010 and handed to the High Commission of Refugee Aid in Mauritania after an international campaign for his release.

How Cheap Genetic Testing Complicates Cancer Screening For Us All

o-ANGELINA-JOLIE-570Sometimes, more medical information is a bad thing. The influential United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends against most women getting genetic screenings for their susceptibility to breast cancer. Why? Because the tests are imperfect: for every woman who gets tested for genes associated with onset breast cancer, even more will falsely test positive, leading spooked patients into needless surgery or psychological trauma. Super cheap genetic testing from enterprising health startups, such as 23andMe, have complicated cancer detection for us all by increasing the accessibility of imperfect medical information.

(AP) ? Another year, another Triple Crown hopeful unable to come through.

After Oxbow upset Kentucky Derby winner Orb in Saturday's Preakness to extend racing's Triple Crown drought to 36 years, the next best alternative for the Belmont Stakes is a rematch.

And, it appears one is in the making. Both trainers are giving every indication their classic-winning colts will run in the Belmont on June 8.

After Oxbow's 1 ?-length victory over Itsmyluckyday, with 3-5 favorite Orb finishing fourth, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said he would probably bring the winner to New York.

Trainer Shug McGaughey says he'd like to run Orb in the Belmont as long as the colt is doing well.

Chinese premier heads to India to boost ties

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Just weeks after a tense border standoff, China's new premier headed to India on Sunday for his first foreign trip as the neighboring giants look to speed up efforts to settle a decades-old boundary dispute and boost economic ties.

China says Premier Li Keqiang's choice of India for his first trip abroad since taking office in March shows the importance Beijing attaches to improving relations with New Delhi.

"We think very highly of this gesture because it is our view that high-level political exchanges between our two countries are an important aspect and vehicle for our expanded cooperation," said India's external affairs ministry spokesman, Syed Akbaruddin.

Jasjit Singh, a defense analyst and director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in New Delhi, said last month's border standoff was unlikely to overshadow Li's three-day visit, the first stop of a foreign tour in which he will also visit Pakistan, Switzerland and Germany.

Singh said Indian and Chinese leaders are likely to review border talks that have failed to produce a breakthrough despite 15 rounds of discussions over the past 10 years. The two sides also will probably discuss working together in Afghanistan after next year's U.S. pullout and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, he said.

But tensions run high between the two nations. China already sees itself as Asia's great power, while India hopes its increasing economic and military might ? though still far below its neighbor's ? will eventually put it in the same league.

While China has worked to shore up relationships with Nepal and Sri Lanka in India's traditional South Asian sphere of influence, India has been venturing into partnerships with Southeast Asian nations.

Other irritants remain in the bilateral relationship. China is a longtime ally and weapons supplier to Pakistan, India's bitter rival. Also, the presence in India of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile is a source of tension. China accuses the Dalai Lama of wanting to split Tibet off from the rest of China, but he says he seeks more autonomy for Tibetans, not independence.

Unresolved border issues between the two nations have flared as well.

In last month's incident, India said Chinese troops crossed the countries' de facto border on April 15 and pitched camp in the Depsang valley in the Ladakh region of eastern Kashmir. New Delhi responded with diplomatic protests and then moved its soldiers just 300 meters (yards) from the Chinese position.

The two sides negotiated a peaceful end to the standoff by withdrawing troops to their original positions in the Ladakh area.

Gautam Bambawale, a senior Indian external affairs ministry official, said India and China are negotiating a Border Defense Cooperation Agreement, but declined to give details. Indian media reports said the agreement proposes a freezing of troop levels in the disputed border region as the two countries make efforts to settle the issue.

Bambawale also said Indian and Chinese officials recently held talks in Beijing on the future of Afghanistan. China, India and Russia have discussed the matter trilaterally with the idea of giving full support to Afghanistan's government as it makes the transition following the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2014.

Shortly after his arrival in the Indian capital of New Delhi late Sunday afternoon, Li is to meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who will host a dinner for him. Delegation-level talks between the two sides are scheduled for Monday. Li is to attend a business summit in Mumbai, India's financial capital, among other activities.

The border spat last month prompted the Indian opposition and media to pressure the government to take on China and call off Li's visit. The government, however, chose to go ahead with the trip, highlighting its policy of trying to widen areas of cooperation with China while attempting to resolve key differences.

China has become India's biggest trading partner, with two-way trade jumping from $5 billion in 2002 to nearly $75 billion in 2011, although that figure declined to $61.5 billion last year because of the global economic downturn. Trade remains heavily skewed in China's favor, another source of concern for India.

India and China have had chilly relations since they fought a brief but bloody border war in 1962.

India says China is occupying 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory in the Aksai Chin plateau in the western Himalayas, while China claims around 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Dorjee Tseten, director of the Students for a Free Tibet, said Sunday that New Delhi police had declined permission for Tibetans to hold a demonstration against Li's visit.

"Tibetan activists are currently on the run evading imminent police arrest," he said in a statement, complaining of a heavy police presence in a New Delhi area where a large number of Tibetans-in-exile live.

Police, however, allowed about two dozen members of Shiv Sena, a Hindu right-wing political party, to demonstrate near India's Parliament, where they burned an effigy of the Chinese premier.

"Go back, go back," chanted the protesters, who also carried placards urging the Indian government to respond toughly to China's alleged border incursion. The powerful regional party held power in Mumbai from 1995 to 2000.

Hofstra graduates honor student killed by police

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ? Students at Hofstra University wore white ribbons at their graduation ceremony to honor a fellow student who was accidentally killed by a police officer tackling an armed intruder.

Sunday's ceremony came two days after Andrea Rebello died when the masked man entered her off-campus home on Long Island.

A police officer aiming at the would-be robber opened fire, hitting the 21-year-old college junior as well as the ex-convict who had entered the house.

On Saturday evening, flags on campus were at half-staff and students held a silent outdoor in front of a photo of the young woman. Surrounded by candles and flowers, they sang "Ave Maria."

Rebello's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Sleepy Hollow, which is in Westchester County.

Exclusive: Onex fails to find buyer for Carestream Health

By Soyoung Kim and Greg Roumeliotis

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Onex Corp has called off its auction of medical imaging firm Carestream Health Inc after failing to find a buyer that was willing to meet its price expectation of as much as $3.5 billion, three people familiar with the matter said this week.

Bain Capital LLC, the last remaining private equity firm that was talking to Onex about a possible deal, dropped out of the auction this week, the people said. Another interested party, Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, exited the process earlier, they added.

Onex is now considering other options for Carestream, with a dividend recapitalization the most likely outcome, one of the people said. Under that scenario, Carestream would borrow money to pay Onex, a Canadian private equity firm, a special dividend.

All the people asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential. Representatives of Carestream and Onex did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Bain and Thomas H. Lee Partners declined to comment.

With interest rates at record lows, financing markets have never been more favorable for private equity deals. Still, a stock market rally has boosted the price expectations of sellers, even of private companies, and has made buyers wary of overpaying.

There have been 180 so-called secondary buyouts - involving the sale of a company from one private equity firm to another - announced since the start of the year, with a total volume of $16.3 billion, compared with 191 secondary buyouts worth $11.1 billion in the same period a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Rochester, New York-based Carestream was formed in 2007 when Onex bought Eastman Kodak Co's health group and renamed the business Carestream. The company provides digital X-ray systems, molecular imaging systems and dental imaging products, software and services.

Onex bought the company for $2.35 billion, equivalent to less than five times its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), and was hoping to receive seven to eight times its EBITDA, the people said.

Carestream had annual EBITDA of $429 million and net debt of $1.5 billion as of December 31, according to a financial earnings statement from Onex. Onex and its funds collectively own 93 percent of Carestream.

Much of the investment case for Carestream hinged on it successfully making a transition from X-ray films - which currently account for about half of the company's profits - to digital technology, people familiar with the matter told Reuters previously.

The challenges of making this transition, particularly in international markets, led other private equity firms to take a dim view of Carestream's valuation, the people said. The lack of growth reduced Carestream's appeal to other medical technology companies involved in the sector, they added.

Large private equity deals in U.S. healthcare have been few and far between of late. Last month, a consortium of private equity firms comprising Blackstone Group LP , KKR & Co LP , Carlyle Group LP and Temasek Holdings made an unsuccessful attempt to acquire Life Technologies Corp , a maker of genetic instruments that instead agreed to sell itself to Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc for $13.6 billion.

Carestream, which was working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc , Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse Group AG on the sale, had also attracted interest from Carlyle and KKR earlier in the process, people familiar with the matter have said.

Frolicking With The Grove Nymph - Bleeding Cool Comic Book ...

the_grove_nymph_cover Cameron Hatheway writes;

Unfortunately whenever I see the word ?nymph? nowadays, I automatically think ?nympho? or ?nymphomaniac,? forgetting that it used to stand for something magical and pure. For too long has our society corrupted the word, turning it into a label for people like my psycho ex.

Then again, putting a naked woman on the cover of The Grove Nymph #1 certainly could be perceived in a more erotic light than intended. But fear not! This series is nothing more but a simple fantasy genre, and nowhere near the Zenescope kind.

Focusing on a nymph named Mira, she grows bored of sitting idly by the springs and groves in the forest with her sister nymph Mari. Mira longs for adventure, for they?ve been doing the exact same routine for the past century. Deciding to finally go exploring, Mira immediately finds herself rescuing a Pom Sprite who was about to get eaten by a nasty Root Goblin, and that?s when things start to really get interesting. The Pom Sprite is on a mission to rescue its sisters from a monster who kidnapped them beyond the grove, and Mira decides to embark on this quest and help out anyway she can.

There is lots of nudity in this first issue, but all of it is tasteful. Nymphs are beings of the elements, so to find one with clothes in nature would look truly out of place. Jecaro?s style for the nymphs and Pom Sprites are simple yet incredibly well detailed, while the more bizarre creatures like the Root Goblin and eye-kneed guy are creepy yet intriguing. I especially enjoyed the color choices, and laughed at first when I saw that Mira?s carpet did in fact match the drapes.

With only two issues left, I highly recommend tracking down this first issue and give it a read. For 99 cents on ComiXology, do you really have an excuse to pass it up? I thought not.

Caribbean talks conservation on Branson's island

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? In a bid to safeguard biodiversity and the Caribbean's tourism-based economy, regional political leaders and corporate executives will gather Friday on billionaire Richard Branson's private island with the aim of protecting 20 percent of the region's coastal resources by 2020.

Participants are expected to announce various commitments to advance the "Caribbean Challenge," an initiative that is touted as the first comprehensive conservation endeavor in the region of scattered islands that has 10 percent of the world's coral reefs and some 1,400 species of fish and marine mammals.

To safeguard the Caribbean's future, Branson says politics and business-as-usual will have to change. The adventuring CEO and founder of the Virgin Group of companies is co-hosting the meeting of political and business leaders at Necker Island, his home in the British Virgin Islands where he has developed an ultra-exclusive eco-resort that showcases renewable energy technology and reintroduced flamingoes.

"It's just so important to get every single Caribbean country 100 percent behind protecting the wonderful sea life and the wonderful reefs and mangroves, and therefore the species that occupy our oceans," Branson said in a phone interview from the island.

British Virgin Islands Premier Orlando Smith and Grenada Prime Minister Keith Mitchell are also co-hosting the gathering of delegations from nine Caribbean countries, chiefs of resort companies and cruise lines, representatives of the World Bank, United Nations and other international bodies, private foundations and environmental groups.

The Nature Conservancy, an international conservation group headquartered in Virginia, is helping to sponsor the summit and has been providing technical assistance to participating governments for years. The conservancy touts the Caribbean Challenge, begun in 2008, as among the world's most ambitious conservation initiatives.

"The Caribbean is truly paradise under threat, and today's focus is a critical step toward a brighter future," Glenn Prickett, chief external affairs officer with the Nature Conservancy, said in an email.

If the Caribbean, the world's most tourism dependent region, takes strong steps now to protect its natural resources, conservationists say it will put itself in a far stronger position to protect its small economies and cope with future threats from climate change and ocean acidification due to greenhouse gases.

The challenges are many in the ecologically stressed Caribbean, which covers some 10,000 square kilometers (3,860 square miles). Once brilliant coral reefs have lost their luster due to warming waters and disease. Live coral cover has plummeted to an average of just 8 percent from 50 percent in the 1970s, the International Union for Conservation of Nature says. Three-fourths of the reefs are considered threatened, also degraded by overfishing, runoff pollution and coastal development.

"In the past, the Caribbean has not been great at protecting the eagle rays and the sharks and the reef fish and so on," Branson said.

Some of the Caribbean Challenge's participating countries ? Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and the British Virgin Islands ? have already taken steps to reach their conservation targets.

The Dominican Republic has actually exceeded its 20 percent goal by creating more than 30 new protected areas in recent years. The Bahamas established the largest marine protected area in the region by expanding a national park in Andros from 185,000 acres to 1.28 million acres. Jamaica has set up several "no-take" fishing sanctuaries.

But there are questions about how deep the political will really is in a region with heavily indebted governments. Political leaders have long spoken about the need for protecting coasts, developing alternative energy sources and diversifying tourism-dependent economies but little has been accomplished. One country, Antigua & Barbuda, recently dropped out of the initiative for reasons that are not clear.

Branson said strong conservation efforts would pay off for years to come for a region where 70 percent of the people live in coastal settlements and a $20 billion tourism industry provides more than 2 million jobs.

"Many, many people who come to the Caribbean come because they want to enjoy the reef, they want to see the sea life on the reef," Branson said. "And therefore they want to see it better protected."

(AP) ? Everything's a go for Orb.

The Kentucky Derby winner was in a playful mood the day before the Preakness, making faces for photographers between nibbles of grass outside his stall at Pimlico Race Course.

"He's really settled in well. He seems to be energetic about what he's doing so I couldn't be more pleased," trainer Shug McGaughey said on a warm and sunny Friday morning. "We're excited about giving him a whirl to see if we can get it done and go on to the next step."

Getting it done would mean defeating eight rivals in the 1 3-16-mile Preakness to set up a Triple Crown try in the Belmont Stakes three weeks from Saturday. Orb is the even-money favorite, and there's a growing feeling that this 3-year-old bay colt may be special enough to give thoroughbred racing its first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

"We'd sure love to have that opportunity," said McGaughey, seeming relaxed and confident. "Probably the racing world would love to see it, too. It brings a lot more attention to what we're doing from all standpoints."

Orb extended his winning streak to five with a thrilling victory in the Derby two weeks ago, when jockey Joel Rosario patiently guided the colt from 17th to first in the final half mile over a sloppy track.

In the Preakness, Orb will break from the No. 1 post, a spot that has seen only one winner ? Tabasco Cat in 1994 ? since 1961.

"Who knows how this race is going to go, but I don't think it will be a problem," Rosario said of the inside post. "He's a horse that comes from behind, so I really don't think it will affect him. I'm just excited to go into this with a horse who has a chance to win."

A chance?

While rival trainers aren't conceding the race, most agree Orb is the best of the bunch.

"Orb, he's a freak. Right now, everybody should be rooting for Orb, except for the connections of the other horses in the race," trainer Bob Baffert said ? and he's got a horse in the race, 12-1 choice Govenor Charlie. "Anybody who's not rooting for Orb, there's something mentally wrong with them."

Baffert has been there before. Three of his five Preakness winners had also won the Derby, but were unable to complete the Triple Crown with a win in the Belmont. He says the Preakness is the least stressful of the three races.

"There is absolutely no pressure, believe it or not because you've just won the Derby," he said. "You're flying high and everybody's excited. You don't think about it. The next one (the Belmont) is the pressure."

Getting to the next one may sound easy. It isn't. Six of the past eight Derby winners did not win the Preakness, and McGaughey is well aware of the pitfalls.

"There are a lot of ways you can lose. Freaky things can happen," he said. "You hope he doesn't get in any trouble, you hope he handles the track, you hope he handles the kickback of the dirt, you hope he handles the day. If he does all that, I would have to think it will take a pretty darn good horse to beat him."

Maybe it's Goldencents, who did not take to the slop at Churchill Downs and finished 17th after winning the Santa Anita Derby in April.

"Orb's not like a one-race hit. All year long he's been super impressive," said Goldencents trainer Doug O'Neill, who won the Derby and Preakness last year with I'll Have Another, only to scratch the colt the day before the Belmont because of a tendon injury. "But we've seen Goldencents do some brilliant things in the afternoon. If he does, I think he can beat him."

Maybe it's Itsmyluckyday, another top 3-year-old who did not handle the sloppy track and finished 15th in the Derby.

"He's given me every sign that he's ready for the war; he's ready for the race; he's ready for the battle," trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., said. "Let's just get it on."

Or maybe it's Departing, one of the three horses in the race who did not run in the Derby. Orb knows Departing well ? the two were pals growing up at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., and ran around together in the same field. The gelding has won four of five starts, and comes into the Preakness off a win in the Illinois Derby.

And, of course, there's D. Wayne Lukas, who has three of the nine entries in Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five, a colt owned by Green Bay Packer greats Paul Hornung and Willie Davis. Lukas, like Baffert, has five Preakness wins, and his next victory in a Triple Crown race would give him a record 14 ? one more than "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons.

Oxbow was sixth and Will Take Charge eighth in the Derby, while Titletown Five is a maiden winner who ran fourth in the Derby Trial.

"You have to be careful about that much emphasis on one race," Lukas said of Orb's Derby win. "You change the surface, you shorten the race, you put him in the one hole. These are things he'll have to overcome. He's the best horse. It's his race to lose. But it only takes one horse to spoil your day."

Weather could be a factor, too. The latest forecast for Saturday is calling for a 50 percent chance of rain with temperatures reaching the low 70s. Post time for the race on NBC is 6:20 p.m.

While Orb will take his shot at becoming the 34th horse with a chance at the Triple Crown ? 11 have done it, 19 failed and three others did not run in the Belmont ? several other historic milestones are in play. Rosie Napravnik will be aboard 5-1 second choice Mylute in an attempt to become the first female to the win the Preakness and Kevin Krigger, who rides Goldencents, looks to become the first black jockey to win since Willie Simms with Sly Fox in 1898.

Orb's rapid rise began with his win in the Fountain of Youth, followed by a solid victory in the Florida Derby before he ran off with the Kentucky Derby. The colt is co-owned by racing royalty ? Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps and his first cousin, Marylander Stuart Janney III. They run their racing operation the traditional way ? breeding and racing their own horses rather than attending sales and trying to buy champions.

McGaughey has been the Phipps' trainer for 28 years, and has campaigned such champions as Easy Goer, Inside Information and the undefeated Personal Ensign.

"This has kind of shown that with Stuart Janney's relationship with breeding that it can be done in a different way," McGaughey said. "There's a long line of pedigree that's been in their family for years and years and years and there's a lot of thought process in breeding horses to mares ? whether right or wrong. And we might have gotten a little lucky this time."

Bach to the blues, our emotions match music to colors

May 16, 2013 ? Whether we're listening to Bach or the blues, our brains are wired to make music-color connections depending on how the melodies make us feel, according to new research from the University of California, Berkeley. For instance, Mozart's jaunty Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major is most often associated with bright yellow and orange, whereas his dour Requiem in D minor is more likely to be linked to dark, bluish gray.

Moreover, people in both the United States and Mexico linked the same pieces of classical orchestral music with the same colors. This suggests that humans share a common emotional palette -- when it comes to music and color -- that appears to be intuitive and can cross cultural barriers, UC Berkeley researchers said.

"The results were remarkably strong and consistent across individuals and cultures and clearly pointed to the powerful role that emotions play in how the human brain maps from hearing music to seeing colors," said UC Berkeley vision scientist Stephen Palmer, lead author of a paper published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Using a 37-color palette, the UC Berkeley study found that people tend to pair faster-paced music in a major key with lighter, more vivid, yellow colors, whereas slower-paced music in a minor key is more likely to be teamed up with darker, grayer, bluer colors.

"Surprisingly, we can predict with 95 percent accuracy how happy or sad the colors people pick will be based on how happy or sad the music is that they are listening to," said Palmer, who will present these and related findings at the International Association of Colour conference at the University of Newcastle in the U.K. on July 8. At the conference, a color light show will accompany a performance by the Northern Sinfonia orchestra to demonstrate "the patterns aroused by music and color converging on the neural circuits that register emotion," he said.

The findings may have implications for creative therapies, advertising and even music player gadgetry. For example, they could be used to create more emotionally engaging electronic music visualizers, computer software that generates animated imagery synchronized to the music being played. Right now, the colors and patterns appear to be randomly generated and do not take emotion into account, researchers said.

They may also provide insight into synesthesia, a neurological condition in which the stimulation of one perceptual pathway, such as hearing music, leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a different perceptual pathway, such as seeing colors. An example of sound-to-color synesthesia was portrayed in the 2009 movie The Soloist when cellist Nathaniel Ayers experiences a mesmerizing interplay of swirling colors while listening to the Los Angeles symphony. Artists such as Wassily Kandinksky and Paul Klee may have used music-to-color synesthesia in their creative endeavors.

In the first experiment, participants were asked to pick five of the 37 colors that best matched the music to which they were listening. The palette consisted of vivid, light, medium, and dark shades of red, orange, yellow, green, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, and purple.

Participants consistently picked bright, vivid, warm colors to go with upbeat music and dark, dull, cool colors to match the more tearful or somber pieces. Separately, they rated each piece of music on a scale of happy to sad, strong to weak, lively to dreary and angry to calm.

Two subsequent experiments studying music-to-face and face-to-color associations supported the researchers' hypothesis that "common emotions are responsible for music-to-color associations," said Karen Schloss, a postdoctoral researchers at UC Berkeley and co-author of the paper.

For example, the same pattern occurred when participants chose the facial expressions that "went best" with the music selections, Schloss said. Upbeat music in major keys was consistently paired with happy-looking faces while subdued music in minor keys was paired with sad-looking faces. Similarly, happy faces were paired with yellow and other bright colors and angry faces with dark red hues.

Next, Palmer and his research team plan to study participants in Turkey where traditional music employs a wider range of scales than just major and minor. "We know that in Mexico and the U.S. the responses are very similar," he said. "But we don't yet know about China or Turkey."

Other co-authors of the study are Zoe Xu of UC Berkeley and Lilia Prado-Leon of the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.

FEC endorses medium term debt management strategy - Vanguard

Abuja ? The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday in Abuja approved a medium term debt management strategy to address the structure and level of the nation?s domestic and foreign debts.

Dr Yerima Ngama, the Minister of State for Finance, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the FEC meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House.

Ngama said the medium term debt management strategy was designed to address the challenges of growing domestic debt and create space for the private sector to access more credit.

?The strategy was developed jointly by the Debt Management Office (DMO) and the CBN with input from National Bureau of Statistics and the National Planning Commission,?? he said.

Ngama said the structure of the nation?s debt was not optimal because 88 per cent of the debt was domestic, while only 12 per cent was foreign.

?We have a total of over N6 trillion worth of debt. However, it is not just the level but the cost of servicing the debt.

?Nigeria has one of the highest interest rates in the developing world and if you have a high level of debt, then debt servicing will become very expensive,?? he said.

The minister said that after offsetting the huge foreign debt owed to the Paris and London Clubs, the country had concentrated on developing internal ways of raising resources.

He said the 2010 wage increase for public servants, which made government to raise a N3.6 trillion bond, was one of the reasons for the growth in the domestic debt profile.

?The increase in wages had led to an annual budget deficit of N1 trillion, sourced locally and not covered by the budgets,?? Ngama added.

He said Federal Government?s intervention to curtail the impact of the global economic recession was also responsible for the sharp increase in the domestic debt.

The minister recalled that in order to keep the economy afloat during the global crisis, the government added some stimulus spending which was raised internally, adding that this also led to the huge domestic debt.

?Payments made to local contractors for jobs done many years back and not captured in the budget and the paying off of the pension and gratuity to NITEL and Nigeria Airways staff also increased the domestic debt profile,?? he said.

Ngama said the more than N699 billion used to service domestic debts in 2012 created a disproportionate debt financing.

He said the high rate of borrowing by government from local banks was responsible for the?? inadequate funds to the private sector and its multiple effects on economic growth.

The minister said the strategy adopted by the Council would assist in reversing the trend, keep the debt structure in an optimal way and decrease domestic debt.

?As part of the strategy, government will access concessionary windows or raise cheaper foreign loans and use it to offset the more expensive domestic debts,?? he said.

Ngama said the country?s borrowing profile was acceptable at 18 per cent of GDP.? (NAN)
